CORNWELL CUP
ONLY ONE CHALLENGE FROM SOUTH ISLAND
The challengers for the Cornwell Cup yacht races, which will be held at Plimmerton, commencing on January 14, include only one South Island crew. This crew will represent the Otago Yacht and Motor-Boat Club. Last year 11 ports were represented in the contest, including a crew from Suva. Christchurch and Lyttelton, which were also represented, will not be competing this year. This season’s challengers are Plimmerton, Wellington, Paremata, Auckland, Tauranga, Manukau, and Otago. T. S. Camp (skipper) and W. A. Carrington (forward hand) will represent Otago." According to Mr W. A. Cameron, vice-president of the Otago Club, who is visiting Christchurch, both these boys have shown superior seamanship throughout the series of trial races held in the Otago harbour. Of the seven races sailed Camp succeeded in winning three. He was disqualified in one other race after winning it. In another he held a lead of three minutes when the mast broke, and in a race, which was recalled after the expiration of time, he held a lead of 7i minutes. The trials were conducted strictly under contest rules.
“We place a lot of confidence in “these Tsoys, not only as oxxr repressntatives, but, in the circumstances, as representatives of the South Island,” said Mr Cameron. It is said that the reason for the apparent lack of interest by South Island clubs in the contest is because the Takapuna class of boat, which is used in the Cornwell Cup races, is losing popularity and is being replaced with boats of the Idle Along class. In a race held by the Canterbury Club at Lyttelton recently, 22 Idle Along class boats actually started, while there are only two or three of the other class of boat in the club. A similar situation exists in the Christchurch Club.
