The Plunket Shield cricket match between Wellington and Otago, which had extended over less than three days, ended at 2.25 p.m. to-day in a sweeping victory for Wellington by an innings and 130 runs. Wellington in one innings scored 409 runs. Otago collapsed In the first innings for 118 on Monday, and, following on, had lost two wickets for 23 runs. Light showers on Monday night had refreshed the pitch, and the weather was fine with a cool southerly breeze when Otago continued the second innings this morning. The batsmen were on the defensive to the good bowling of J. Ashenden, T. L. Pritchard, N. Gallichan, and H. F. Rice, and runs came slowly during the day. Solid defence was shown by Elmes, Knight, Mills, and Leader, but the bowling of Ashenden proved too good for the majority of the batsmen,' and the whole side was dismissed for 161. Varying length and pace cleverly, Ashenden took six wickets for 44 off 14.1 overs, Pritchard, who was so destructive in Otago’s first innings, had to be content to-day with one for 48 off 17 overs. Gallichan and Rise also bowled very steadily. Mills Caught With two wickets down for 23. and requiring 268 to avoid an innings defeat. Knight (13) and Mills (3) resumed Otago’s second innings. Pritchard took up the bowling from the southern end, and Asnenden bowled against a southerly breeze. Both batsmen were shaping confidently, and with 49 up. Gallichan relieved Ashenden. Fifty came up after the innings had been in progress 62 minutes. Mills hit Gallichan to the sight screen, but was snapped up by Tindill behind the wickets off the next ball. Mills had shaped confidently for his 20. • Elmes joined Knight. The score was taken to 58, where Knight, who had been batting for 71 minutes for 29. was wen taken at second slip by Ashenden off Pritchard. Four for 58. With the total at 66. Rice relieved Pritchard. With a single added, Cutler popped one from Gallichan into Rice s hands at silly mid-off. Five for 67. Fraser came next, and a slow period followed. Rice sent down four maiden overs in succession. One run came from seven overs at this stage. Then, after having been at the wickets for 20 minutes, Fraser opened his account with a single off Gallichan. He was then bowled by a good one from Rice. Six for 72. Brighter Play Leader joined Elmes. With the total at 80, Pritchard, relieved Rice. Elmes reached double figures after batting for an hour. A long period of slow play was brightened by Leader hitting Gallichan twice to the fence. With the total at 97 Harpur took the ball from Pritchard, and Elmes brought 100 up after 133 minutes bv swinging one from the new bowler to ‘the boundary at long-leg. Play brightened up. Leader off-driving one from Harpur for three, and Elmes lifting one in the same over to the pickets at mid-on. At 112, Ashenden replaced Gallichan. The luncheon adjournment was taken with the score at 117, Elmes 27, Leader 24. Pritchard and Ashenden took up the attack. The score was taken to 125, when Leader, who had scored 24, was snapped up low down In the slips by Ell off Ashenden. Groves joined Elmes. who was 35, and the score was taken to 142, where Elmes. who had played a very patient innings of 113 minutes for 40, fell Ibw to Ashenden. Silver came next, but after hitting a boundary off Ashenden, was clean-bowled by the same bowler. Purdue, the last man, arrived to see Groves lift one from Ashenden over the fence at long-on for six. Rice, at second slip, dropped Purdue off Pritchard. The score was taken to 161, where Grovess who had scored 10 quickly, was bowled by Ashenden. The innings, which closed at 2.25 p.m., occupied 177 minutes. Scores;—

WELLINGTON TEAM TO PLAY CANTERBURY

The Wellington cricket team will leave by the steamer express to-mor-row night for Christchurch, where they will play a Plunket Shield match against Canterbury on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. The sole selector for Wellington. Mr A. W. Duncan, has made no alteration in the team which so signally defeated Otago in the Plunket Shield match at Wellington.

The failure of the Otago batsmen m the second innings against Nortii Otago on an easy wicket gave the bomeloam a decisive win by eight wickets and five runs when the match was continued at the Waitaki Boys’ Ifigh School ground to-day. North Otago gained a first innings lead of one run, Otago replying with only 60 The team batted poorly, the batsmen getting themselves out through attempting to score rashly off Robertson s slow-flighted leg breaks. BRADMAN SCORES 225 (UKITBD PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) MELBOURNE, December 26. In a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales at Melbourne, Victoria, in Its , first innings, made 504 (Lee 121, Gregory 71, Hassctt 58, Sides not out 53, Ledward 37). O’Reilly took six wickets for 152 runs and Fitzpatrick two for 47. New South Wales in its second innings has made 219 for three (Barnes 78, Chipperfield not out 72). At Adelaide, in a Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, Queensland in Us first Innings made 131. G. Cook was top scorer with 34 not out. Grimmett took six wickets for 33 runs. South Australia In Its first innings made 462 (Bradman 225, Badcock 100). Baker took six wickets for 36 . runs. Ellis two for 87, and Cook two for 85.
