OBITUARY

MRS C. EGAN

An old and highly respected resident of Westport, Mrs Catherine Egan, died on Monday evening, aged 76. She was a native of County Clare, Ireland. She came to the district 50 years ago, and had many friends. She leaves two sons, Messrs Patrick and Timothy Egan (Westport), and two daughters. Mrs J. Matthews (Wellington) and Miss Mary Egan (Westport). Miss Bride O’Connor (Westport) is a neice. Mrs Egan’s husband died some years ago

PICKPOCKETS ACTIVE

WESTPORT RACE PATRONS ROBBED

At the Westport trotting meeting on Monday pickpockets were active, one of at least three victims losing £6O from his pocket. The thefts seem to be the work of an experienced pickpocket. The police are making inquiries.

Scandrett are spendding the holidays at Akaroa. Mr and Mrs Bird and the Misses U. and J. Bird left yesterday for Christchurch. Messrs W. O’Neill and C. Finn (Runanga) left for Christchurch yesterday. Mr and Mrs Cecil Anderson (Paroa) left yesterday bn a holiday visit to the North Island.

Mr E. Keating, of Wellington, has arrived on a holiday visit. Mr R. E. Herron, manager of the Wellington milk supply, has arrived on a holiday visit to his daughter, Mrs K. E. Balchin. Murray street.

WESTPORT Mr and Mrs W. Soanes (Christchurch) are visiting Westport. Mr H. Penrose (Auckland) is visiting, his parents at Westport. Mr L. M. Larsen (Christchurch) is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs L. Larsen (Westport). Miss J. Rumbold (Christchurch) is visiting Mr and Mrs O. L. Nahr, Westport. Mr J. McNamara (Christchurch) is spending the holidays with relations at Westport. Misses J. Powell, J. McGovern, G. Strachan, and L. Upham (Westport) have lelt on a holiday visit to the Marlborough Sounds. Misses I. Lamplough, B. Parkinson, and R. O’Grady (Greymouth) visited Westport during the holidays. MiSS R. Gothard (Invercargill) is visiting friends at Westport. Mr G. McKinlay (Wellington) is a visitor to relations at Westport.

Messrs J. Mason and D. Strachan (Westport) left on Monday on a visit to Auckland. Mr J. Strachan (Auckland) is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs S. Strachan, Westport.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

DENNISTON

Mrs J. Allan presided at the December meeting of the Denniston Women’s Institute. The roll call was a “Christmas story,” and the motto, “Time and tide wait for no man.” Mrs J. Evans gave the golden thread talk on a trip to Sydney and Newcastle. Mrs H. Pearson, of Marshallvale, gave a demonstration on tatting. The monthly competition for shortbread resulted:—Mrs D. Coburn special; Mrs Henderson 1, Mrs J. Evans 2, Mrs T. Blake, jun., 3, Mrs C. Jack 4. The social hour was spent in singing Christmas carols. Items were given by Mesdames Anderson and Pearson, and a trio by Mesdames Allan, Coburn, and Baird.

[THE PRESS Special Service.! GREYMOUTH. December 27. The Korowal is in port loading coal for Wellington and Miramar. - The Waimea is due on Thursday night from Nelson to load timber for Port Waikato. She will return to Greymouth via Onehunga and Nelson. The Nikau is expected to leave Nelson on Thursday night for Greymouth to load coal for Picton, replacing the Kaitoa. The Kaitoa is due on January 3 from Nelson to load coal for Tarakohe.

The Totara is due about January 4 to load timber for Petone.

The Karu is due about January 9 to load timber for Petonq, Wellington, and

A Union Company steamer is due about January 25 to load timber for Sydney.
