Great Surprise and Gay Moko did well to fill the minor places after losing a lot of ground early, only for which C they would have made it more difficult for the winner. Once they settled down t to trot they went very solidly, and they 2 are improvers who should be worth watching. The favourite. Big Kauri, weakened into fpurth place after being just behind f the winner half a mile from home. He was forced to cover some extra ground in the first round. Aurumar also tired after making up her handicap. An Improver 8 Benefited by her recent racing at t Claudelands, Harlow showed improved 3 form to win the December Handicap In s handsome style. Harlow became prominent on the outside Just behind the lead- ° ers. Auto Bingen and Kewpie’s Jewel, be- 2 fore completing the first round, and she - ran on very attractively at the end to win with a little in hand. Kewpie’s Bingen, favoured with a good run on the rails, paced his best race for second and is on the improve. The each-way favourite, 0 Electric Ray, was always well placed, and I although he lost a little ground nearing v the turn he stayed on for third. The best 1 has not yet been seen of Electric Ray. v Kewpie’s Jewel was in front until she hj broke about half a furlong from the post. 1< She has plenty of speed, but is not yet J solid. Parishioner was going well in be- b hind the leaders five furlongs from home, r but broke when attempting to go through ? where there was not quite enough room. J’ Equipoise in Form Pacing in his best style, the each-way r favourite. Equipoise, won the Grandstand fi Handicap from end to end. It was his ii fourth success of the season, and he is g one of the best four-year-old pacers seen n In Auckland for some time. There was a great race for second between Sandusky, Icevus, and Connenora, and the judge declared In favour of the first-named by half a head. Sandusky made a fine effort over the last half-mile and is reaching his best form again. Icevus was forced to cover a good deal of ground, and Connenora, although she was on the rails throughout. _ was checked once or twice. Connenora u was going strongly at the end. Glorietta, who did not have a good run, showed signs of returning to form, and Sir Frank made a creditable showing. • The Race for the Cup ] The race for the Trotting Cup was ] similar to that of the cup raced at El- ( lerslie on Monday, as M. Stewart, driver i of Navy Blue, adopted with equal sue- | cess the tactics of H. Long, who rode Cheval de Voice. Stewart took his j charge to the front on the rails, and al- ] though joined early by Waipahi, never allowed the latter to head Navy Blue, . Stewart made the pace to suit the mare, the first half-mile taking Imin 10 3-ssec, c the mile 2mln IBsec. Waipahi broke ■" before reaching the mile and a half, and Bexley Girl made a forward move along j the back, followed by Kenworthy, Our < War, and Toorak. When heads were In ] line for the judge Kenworthy passed J Bexley Girl and challenged Navy Blue, < but siie came on full of running to win J \>y two lengths from. Kenworthy, who J held off a determined effort x>y Toorak, ; with Our War a neck away, fourth. The winner pulled in the early stages, but over the last round paced smoothly to come home too fast for the rest. Kenworthy TOfiade a courageous effort, and Toorak displayed solidness and consist- c ency. The favourite. Fine Art, went away fairly well, but before reaching the furlong post was In the air. Kewple s King received a check which put him right back. Fine Art made up ground to be in behind a bunched field with five furlongs to go. but again was checked, and his chance was extinguished. Horsepower was handily placed in the middle stages but did not run on as expected. In the last few furlongs Navy Blue, Kenworthy, Toorak, Our War, and Bexley. Girl were the only ones with prospects, and they finished accordingly. The winner returned more than a score pri trie win machine. Her sire Man o War, won the cup in 1920, and again in 1921. , A Veteran Showing great dash to sprint to the front in the third furlong, the veteran Gold Circle scored at a good price in the Akarana Handicap, for which Sentiment and Loyal Direct were the favourites. Sentiment, who did not a PPear to be comfortable on the bends, and Bedford chal lenged him strongly over the last hmf mile, and Bedford appeared to have his measure half-way down the straight. However. Gold Circle would not be denied and he came again in the last few strides to gain the verdict by a head. Loyal Direct made a cre J i tt able +> f l La V Mras for fourth, but the form of the others was not impressive. A Surprise I Showing a return to his best form. Pirate^ 1 Last brought off a great surprise In the Rowe Memorial Handicap, paying over a score on the straight-out machine, pirate’s Last made up a lot of ground m the first mile, and he finished attractively although he had little to spare from Great Sonoma, who made a good effort over the last mlie and trotted the best race of his career. Nelson Chief made a determined effort to lead all tbe way. and failed only in the straight, although he held on in the gamest possible fashion. The back-marker. Franz Derby, made a ] brilliant effort over the last round for fourth, and deserved a better reward ®H er going 4mln 35 2-ssec from a 4min flsec mark. Mute weakened after looking likely two furlongs from home, and Blworthy made a fine showing after losing a lot of ground by an early break. Peter Smith in Form Showing a glimpse of the form that has been expected of him for some time, Peter Smith won the Christmas Handicap in attractive style. With a round to go, Peter Smith was a good way behind the leaders, but he made a brilliant run on the outside, and taking charge about two furlongs from home, held off all ■ challenges. Santa Fe, who did not have the best of luck in the early running, made a great effort over the last halfmile, and she was unlucky to meet such an improved pacer as the winner, who should go on to better deeds. Kete Kura was another who came into the picture only near the end of the contest, and he did well to gain third. Marcus ran his usual honest race for fourth, after making most of the pace, and others to make creditable showings were Lady Potts and Militia.

Van Derby made the opposition look cheap in the St. Heliers Handicap, and he justified the odds that were laid upon his ability to win. Van Derby ran the last mile in 2min 9sec without an effort, and he is easily the best horse seen in his class in Auckland for a long time. Van Derby Is a three-quarter brother to Lawn Derby, and he resembles his sire. Globe Derby, whom Aucklanders remember well. Uenuku gave a glimpse of his real form, and he beat the others just as easily as Van Derby beat him. Uenuku will be unlucky if he does not win before the meeting concludes. Effie Parrish battled on Well at the end to gain fourth, and Royal Grattan was close up in fifth position at the end and doing good work. Precious Metal was not prominent at any stage.
