OBITUARY

DR. M. C. F. MORKANE

The death occurred in Christchurch, early yesterday morning of Dr. Michael Charles Frederick Morkane. He was a gynaecologist of note and of world-wide experience.

Born at Port Chalmers in 1877, Dr. Morkane was educated at the Christian Brothers’ School, Dunedin, and at the University of Otago, from which he graduated in 1901 with the degrees of M.8., Ch.B. He then became resident medical officer in the Christchurch Hospital, being later appointed surgeon superintendent of the Ross Hospital, and, later still, of the Kumara Hospital. He was at Kumara from 1903 to 1909. Dr. Morkane was a lecturer at Coombe Hospital, Dublin, of which he became assistant master in 1914. He had gained experience in the London Hospital, at Vienna, in the PostGraduate Hospital, New York, and at the Hospital for Women, Soho, London. From 1921 to 1926 he was external examiner in midwifery and gynaecology for the ,degrees of M.8., Ch.B., In the Otago 'Medical SchooL He took up practice in Christchurch about 20 years ago. In 1928 he became an honorary member of the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and last year he was awarded the honorary fellowship of the college. He was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. Dr. Morkane went ,to the United States about 18 months ago, and while he was in California preparing to return home he became seriously ill. He was in hospital in Auckland for about four months. Returning to Christhe was comparatively well until his illness again took a serious turn last August. The only son of Dr. Morkane is Mr Charles Morkane, a student at the Otago Medical School. There is one brother, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Morkane, administrator of St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin. Miss Carrie Morkane and Miss Claire Morkane, of Cashmere Hills, are sisters of Dr. Morkane. Two other sisters are Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, one at the Sumner Convent and one at the Nelson Convent.

The funeral will leave the Little Company of Mary Hospital at 10.45 tomorrow morning for the Catholic Cathedral, where Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11 o’clock.

WELLINGTON, December 26. The Rev. Father Patrick Fay, S.M., died in the Little Company of Mary Hospital yesterday, aged 65, after an illness of many years. He was educated at St. Patrick’s College, where he was a distinguished scholar and athlete. His record for the hop, step, and jump was unbeaten for 25 years. He studied for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary’s, Hawke’s Bay, and was ordained in 1896. He was first stationed at Blenheim as curate of that parish. He was priest of Temuka and returned to Blenheim to take charge of that parish. From there he went to Mount St. Mary’s as procurator. His next post was as parish priest at Nelson, Failing health made it difficult for him to continue work of such responsibility, and he became assistant priest at Napier, and then at Hastings. He then returned to Blenheim, from where he came to Wellington for his last illness.
