TOTALISATOR RETURNS

INCREASE ON LAST! YEAR’S FIGURES

MARGIN EXCEEDS £SO6S

ASHBURTON TROTTING CLUB £8767 UP

Although unstable weather had an effect on several of the major sporting meetings, the total returns from totalisators for Boxing Day fixtures this year show an increase of more than £BOOO on the figure for last year. This is nothing like the increase which the 1937 figures represented on those for the previous year (the increase was more than £24,000), but at the same time the figure is generally considered to be satisfactory considering the uncertainty of the weather. The most notable increases were recorded at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting, at the Westport and Gore trots, and at race meetings at Taranaki and WaipukurauFigures in some instances actually reached a point comparable with the boom years of 1929, although increases were not universal, and there were some decreases. At Dunedin, for instance, although Hie weather was fine the figures deC The Ashburton Trotting Club’s figures are probably the most interesting of the set. Last year Ashburton showed a decline of approximately £4OOO. This year the figure is £8767 above that of 1937, and far above that of 1936. There were changes in the Manawatu figures, but tbe incidence of Boxing Day must have affected those. For nine days of receipts this year were £319.828 lus, compared with £311,760 10 J kg* year, an actual increase of ±,BUoo. Details of the meetings follow: Racing 1937. 1938.
