Roads on the West Coast during the week-end were thronged by motorists, but up to a late hour last night no serious accident involving injury had been reported anywhere in the district.

Although heavy rain fell on Saturday afternoon and night, the Christmas Eve shopping at Westport was very brisk, and tradesmen report one of the most prosperous Christmas periods lor some years. One grocer estimated his turnover at 30 per cent, more than last year. There is the usual large number of visitors in the town, and many former Westport residents home for the holidays. There does, not seem to have been the same number travelling from Westport to other parts this year. This may be because of the many sports attractions to be held in the Buller district during the holidays,
