A London writer of repute states that: “After years of experience we have found the best thing to do is -to prevent the fly from laying her eggs on the young carrots, and this can be done by the use of whizzed naphthalene. This naphthalene (HORTNAP) should be applied along the rows at the rate of' loz to the yard run a week before the carrots are thinned, a week later, and a further dressing some ten days later. “The idea is to create such a smell of (HORTNAP) that not only is the carrot fly driven away, but the smell of carrots Is so masked that the flies from a distance are not attracted to the bed." “HORTNAP” also protects flowering and Vegetable plants from slugs and snails.
