SHEARING POSITIONS FILLED
PLACEMENTS MADE LAST WEEK No difficulty is being found by tbe State Placement Service at Oamaru In filling the positions offered for shearers, according to advice given “Hie Press" by an official yesterday. The shearing jobs in the district were getting filled in response to farmers’ inquiries, he said. Farin’ workers, chiefly ploughmen and boys, were still wanted. Of tbe 22 placements made for the last week, 15 were .for rascal employment. 13 of these being for general farm work, including turnip thinness and hay makers. The other two casual positions were found for a general labourer and a gardener. The four temporary positions found were for turnip thinners and a cook and kitchen hand. Three permanent positions were filled during the period. Apart from the usual waterside workers, about 20 men were employed last week on the wharves. A number of men formerly on the register have recently themselves secured positions at the freezing works. SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICES COURTHOUSE BUILDING INSPECTED The establishment of Government officers in the Oamaru Courthouse to administer the social security scheme is not now likely after an inspection made recently by an officer of the Pensions Department from Dunedin. It was at first thought that the new department would be situated in this building, but the Inspection disclosed that not sufficient room was available. No decision has yet been reached as a report has to be made. BANK MANAGER HONOURED Mr C. Wylde-Brown, who for tbe last eight years has been manager of the Oamaru branch of the Bank of New South Wales, will leave Oamaru to-day to live in retirement at Thnranga. He was the guest at a recent gathering of about 50 businessmen of the town, including representatives of other banks, when many complimentary references were made to the prominent part he had played in tbe sporting and public life of the district. A fountain pen and wallet were presented to Mr Wylde-Brown by Mr M. P. E. Cooney. The Mayor (Mr I*. J. K. Familton) and several other speakers also extended good wishes to the guest. A further function was held by members of the North Otago Club, of which Mr Wylde-Brown had been a member for several years and president for two years. The president fMr L- R. Jordan) presented him with a suitcase aid a compact for Mrs Wylde-Brown. Several speakers mentioned the valuable service he had given the dub during his membership.
