♦ OFFICIAL FORECASTS (THE PRESS Special Service.) WELLINGTON, December 23. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: — Winds tending northerly or north-easterly on Saturday, and freshening on the coast. Weather fair to fine, temperatures cold hut rising. Prospects for fair weather on Sunday. Seas rough, but decreasing north of Kalkoura; slight to moderate elsewhere. WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is;— Light to moderate and variable winds, tending northerly, and later freshening. Weather fair to fine; temperatures rising. Seas moderate. DOMINION The following is the Dominion foreast: — A few scattered light showers at first, mainly in eastern districts, hut the weather generally fair to fine. Temperatures cold, but rising. The tropical depression mentioned yesterday is now centred south of Tonga, and is moving south-eastward. An anticyclone is approaching across the North Tasman Sea, and a fresh depression has reached south-eastern Australia. Winds—Southerly, strong at first about Cook Strait, but soon moderating, and otherwise light to moderate. A change to northerlies advancing from the south to-morrow. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rather rough to rough at first about Cook Strait and north of Cape Egmont, but decreasing to-night, and elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea—Light to fresh south-west to southerly winds, turning gradually to the west and north-west. -Seas moderate to rather rough. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The weather in, Christchurch yesterday was fair to fine, with a fresh outhwesterly breeze. Temperatures were cold, the maximum recorded being 56.8 degrees. At 1 a.m. the sky was clear, and there was no wind. The tcmpera-i tore was 47 degrees. The barometer was steady at 29.85 inches. - Meteorological observations taken at the Magnetic Observatory, Christchurch. on December 23:

IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—'Yesterday was mainly fine, with , scattered showers in the morning and early in the afternoon. The sky was cloudy. Temperatures were cooler, the maximum being 66 degrees. The barometer fell, the reading at 5 p.m. being 29.63 inches. Wellington—lt was cloudy and overcast and cold yesterday morning, with occasional splashes of rain, but it improved slightly in the afternoon, when there was a fresh breeze. The maximum temperature was 65.5 degrees. The barometer stood at 52.6 degrees. Dunedin: The weather was rough, dull, and threatening early in the morning, with rain showers at intervals. The day later was fine ana warm, with bright sunshine, and there was a slight breeze from the south. The barometer was steady at 29.80 inches. The maximum temperature was 61 degrees.
