ACHIEVEMENT To Aid the Blind Among the achievements of our times are those which make it possible for unfortunate people to enjoy life more than they could ever do in the past. We think especially of the blind. To begin with blindness is decreasing. Fewer children are born blind now than possibly at any time in the history of the world, and fewer people become blind afterwards, all the outcome directly or indirectly of great improvements in many walks of life. As for those who are blind, their lot is happier now. More is done for them. . Organisations to care for them are world-wide. Braille and what is known as Moontype (a kind of Roman lettering raised instead of flat) enable the blind to read 15.000 books a year, besides the 26,000 pamphlets and 600.000 newspapers which are published in these special forms. The blind now have their gramophone records of books and stories which have been read by someone who has a distinct voice and a pleasing manner. Application for these records comes from every corner of the earth. Blind children have a far better chance of being useful and winning happiness than in previous years. They are taught scientifically. They are encouraged to take their place as useful citizens. They are equipped so efficiently that they can earn their living and be self-respecting.
