OFFICIAL FORECASTS

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

WELLINGTON, December 20. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows:

Strong but decreasing southerly to south-westerly winds. Weather cold and showery, with possibly hail in places, but improving. Seas moderate to rather rough.

WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:—

Moderate to strong south-west-erly winds. Weather cool and changeable, with scattered showers, but improving. Seas rather rough.

DOMINION The forecast for the Dominion is:—

Cloudy to overcast with rain at times, in most districts. Some heavy falls probable about Cook Strait. Thunder and hail in places. Temperatures cold, improving tomorrow from the west. A rather deep depression is now passing eastward off the Dominion. An anti-cyclone of slight intensity covers south-eastern Australia and is moving on to the western Tasman Sea

Winds—North-westerly to westerly at first over the northern and northeastern portion of the North Island, but otherwise south-westerlies to southerlies prevailing. Force, moderate to strong and rising in places to gale. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Becoming rather rough to rough generally. Eastern Tasman Sea—Moderate to strong southerly winds, and rough seas, but conditions later moderating.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

Yesterday was heavily overcast and showery in Christchurch. with a heavy fall of rain in the morning. The morning was calm, and there was a light south-west wind in the afternoon. Temperatures were cold, the maximum for the day being 53.1 degrees.

At 1 o'clock this morning there was no wind and the sky was cloudy. The temperature was 49 degrees and the barometer was steady at 29.66 Inches.

Auckland—Yesterday was fine but cloudy, with a fresh wind from the west, strong at times. The maximum temperature was 74 degrees. The barometer fell rapidly and the reading at 5 p.m. was 29.6 inches. Wellington—Yesterday was overcast, with rain in the morning. There was some improvement in the afternoon. There was a light breeze from the south. Temperatures were cool, the maximum being 55.1 degrees. At 3.30 p.m. the temperature *was 54.0 degrees and the barometer at 29.359 inches.

Dunedin—The weather yesterday was fine but dull, and the temperature did not rise above 56 degrees. The barometer fell to 29.52 inches, but rose slightly later.
