HIGH-SPEED LAUNCH ORDERED
GOVERNMENT’S PURCHASE FOB DEFENCE SERVICES (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, December 7. An order has been placed through the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London (Mr W. J. Jordan) for the purchase, at a cost of approximately £22,000, of a 64-foot high-speed motor-boat. The boat is required by the Navy, Army, and Air Force for towing targets and for use by the Air Force as a rescue craft and for general operational training.
Making this announcement this evening, the Minister in charge of the Air Department (the Hon. F. Jones) said that delivery was expected in New Zealand in August next. The launch is somewhat similar to the motor torpedo boats in use in the Royal Navy. It is powered with three Napier Sea Lion engines and is capable of 40 knots. The launch has a good cruising range, and is extremely seaworthy. It is provided with a full range of navigational -equipment and is equipped with wireless.
