The Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes and Mrs Forbes (Cheviot) arrived from Wellington on Saturday morning. Mrs Vincent Ward (Heretaunga) arrived in Christchurch on Saturday and is staying with Mrs Bernard Wp.pd, St. Elmo Courts.
Mr and Mrs J. Macdonald (Wellington) have returned home after spending three weeks at Lancaster House.
Mr and Mrs John Griffiths (Hundalee) are visitors to Christchurch for the Mcßae-Loughnan wedding this week. They are' the guests of Mrs Lewis Griffiths, Peterborough street. Mrs E. Wickham and Miss Phyllis Wickham have returned from a trip to England.
Mr and Mrs H. J. Armstrong (Colombo street North) left yesterday by motor for Dunedin and Invercargill.
■Mr and, Mrs C. Bryant (Armagh street) have returned from a world tour. They arrived in Auckland by the Mariposa on Friday. Mr and Mrs S. F. Smithson (England). who are visiting Christchurch, will leave on Thursday to spend a week in Timaru. They will leave early in December on their return journey to England,
Mrs K. H. Hargreaves (Geraldine), who has been visiting her sister. Mrs James Ritchie, Dunedin, returned home yesterday. Mrs R. M. Hutton-Potts (Invercargill), who is visiting Mrs Leicester Webb, Fendalton, will return home to-morrow.
Mrs E. A, Duncan (Cashmere) is visiting Mrs W. Rankin, Wanganui. Mrs E. W, Hanson, wife of the Governor of American- Samoa, arrived in Auckland by the Mariposa last week. Mrs Hanson will spend a holiday in Australia. Mrs Jason Borthwick (Melbourne), who has been visiting Mrs Herbert Elworthy, “Craigmore,” Timaru, is now the guest of her sister, Mrs David Williams, Hawke’s Bay. Mrs Forbes O’Rorke, who has been the guest of her mother, Mrs E. H. Williams, Dunedin, returned on Saturday to her home in Hororata. Miss Jean Abraham (Dunedin) is the gtiest o£ Mrs R. TJmaru, and later will visit Miss .Helen Denniston, Fendalton, After taking a special course at the University of London, provided for those who are about to undertake educational work among members of native races. Miss Sybil M. Williams, daughter of Canon and Mrs W. G. Williams, of Napier, has been awarded the Diploma of Education at the university. Miss Williams has accepted a position on the staff of the Hukarere Maori Girls’ School for the beginning of the new year. Mr and Mrs Spencer Rowley and Miss Alison Rowley, who have been on furlough with relations in Invercargill, will leave on Thursday for Wellington on the first stage of their journey to Sumatra.

SUCCESFUL FUNCTION AT NEW BRIGHTON
A large number of parents and friends, and more than 150 children in fancy costume attended a fancy dress parade, organised by the combined committees of the ladies’ auxiliary of the New Brighton Returned Soldiers’ Association and the New Brighton Joy Club for the Returned Soldiers’ Christmas tree, held in the Returned Soldiers’ Association social hall on Saturday. The success of the party socially financially exceeded the expectations of the committee in charge of the arrangements. : The committee was Mesdames F, A. .Price, A. E. Nesbitt, H. Jack, R. J. : Potter, E. Martin, R. Rowse, G. Herrick, L. E. Beardsley, H. Crew, W. H. Fisher, F. Teague, A. Cotton, G. Fitzgerald, N. C. Fraser, W. Toombs, F, O. Ormandy, F. Booth, and H. Green. Among the visitors were Mrs F. E. Sutton (Mayoress of Lyttelton), , Mesdames A. Gibson, J. Haladay, C. Loader. B. Loader. D. Taylor, and Miss Myra Sutton, representing the Lyttelton Returned Soldiers’ Association. The judges were the Mayor and Mayoress of New Brighton (Mr and Mrs E. L. Smith), Mrs F. E. Sutton. Mrs Hyman, Mr and Mrs A. E. Haynes. Miss Grade Green, and Mr J: Maybury. The prizes were presented by Mrs Smith. HIGH SCHOOL OLD GIRLS
bn Saturday evening members of the Christchurch High School Old Girls’ Association entertained the prefects, members of the school’s choir and orchestra, and girls who will leave school this year. Mrs Edwin,. Hamilton welcomed the guests, and invited them to join the association next year. The orchestra and choir contributed several musical items, and Mrs G. Maginness was responsible for the presentation of some amusing impersonations. A treasure hunt . in the school, arranged by Miss A. E. Fairbairn, was another popular feature of the programme. The prize-winners were Misses Agnes Hercus, Betty Grant, Zoe Martin, and Pat. Ambridge. Two competitions were held, the winners being Misses Lorna McQuarrie, Hazel Dick, and Moira Wood.
The head prefect of the school, Lois Dalziel, thanked the committee and members of the association for their hospitality.
TRAVELLERS RETURN
MR AND MRS HERBERT HILL
Mr and Mrs Herbert Hill (Heaton street) have returned from a tour of England, Europe, Canada, and the United States. They were in London at the time of the crisis. During their tour of Germany, Mrs Hill thought the people were greatly depressed, and Berlin was not the city of gaiety she had often heard about. The popular outlook was cheerier in, France Commenting of present day fashions. Mrs Hill said womens’ hair on all occasions was dressed high, a style she thought more effective at night than in the daytime. Hats ranged in size from saucers to cartwheels, and in New York tiny hats were popular Violet and fuchsia shades, Mrs Hill said, were greatly favoured, and in New York black with brilliant rehef was popular. Costume jewellery was an interesting vogue.

'Z’ct celebrate the labour party's suecess at the General Election, thd, recently formed Aranui branch of' the Labour Party entertained a large number of guests at a victory dance held in the Aranui Hall on Saturday evenins* The guests of honour were the Hon. D. G. Sullivan and Mrs Sullivan, the Mayor and Mayoress of Christchurch (Mr and Mrs R. M. Macfarlane), Mr and Mrs J. Roberts, Mr and Mrs T. Smith, and Mr and Mrs Kelso. Representatives of the Richmond, Linwood, Christchurch North, Woolston, and New Brighton branches of the Labour Party were present. Members of the organising committee were Messrs G. Wheeler, M. H. Williams. R. Sutherland. H. Mcllroy, H. Earnshaw, A. J. Laird, and the following members the ladies’ social committee: Mesdames A. J. Jones (convener), J. Buschl. J. Roberts, and F. Thorn. . . , A shoulder-spray, was presented to Mrs Sullivan, Mrs Jones making the presentation on behalf of the Aranui branch. . A novelty decoration on the supper table —a miniature train —was presented to Mr Sullivan. _ „ . , The music was played by Judkins orchestra, and Mr M. Williams acted as master of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs Morrow, and Mr and Mrs E. Ford. Those present included the Hon. D. G. Sullivan and Mrs Sullivan, the Mayor and Mayoress of Christchurch (Mr and Mrs R. M.
