GOVERNMENT GRANT

PROPOSED SPORTS GROUND

REQUEST OF REDCLIFFS BURGESSES

A report on an interview he had had with Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., about a grant from the Government for materials to be (used for the proposed sports ground at the Cutting, was, given by Mr J. S. Barr at a meeting of the Redcliffs Burgesses’ Association. Mr H. G. Hunt presided. Mr Barr said that Mr McCombs had told him that if an application was made to the Minister for Employment (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong), money would be made available v for labour, but not for materials. It was decided to act in accordance with his suggestion.

The question of danger from passing trams to motorists leaving Celia street was discussed. On the motion of Mr T.'Perry, it was decided to write to . the Christchurch Tramway Board, requesting that a notice should be erected in Celia street warning motorists of the proximity- of trams. Mr J. Neilson reported that he hadinspected the reserve at the cutting recently, and that excellent progress was being made in forming the sports ground by the Sumner Borough Council staff. When completed the sports ground would be a wonderful asset to the district, he concluded. A scheme for a hall for Redcliffs was outlined by Mr H. G. Hunt, who said that this was an urgent necessity for the district and should be dealt with at once. After discussing the matter, a sub-committee comprising Messrs I. J. Wilson, J. Neilson, J. S. Barr. T. Perry, and W. Jamieson, whs appointed to confer with the Redcliffs Library Committee. On the motion of Mr J. S. Barr, it was unanimously agreed that no action be taken by the association about possible traffic dangers arising at the Cutting until six months after the naw McCormack’s Bay road has been opened. Reporting on the recent conference .of local church and sports bodies, sponsored by the association, about youth welfare in Redcliffs, Mr F. H. Hamilton said that the meeting had been an outstanding success, and steps were being taken to further the project.
