TRAVEL IN THE SOUTH

CONFERENCE OF ASSOCIATION ! Important aspects of the tourist trade of the South Island were discussed at the annual conference of the South Islands Travel Association, held in the Chamber of Commerce Hall yesterday. Delegates from most of the important local authorities in the south attended. There were present at the conference Mr A. H. Allen (Mayor of Dunedin), who presided, Messrs C. H. Chbborn (honorary treasurer), R. T. McMillan, and A. E. Langdale-Hunt (Lyttelton Harbour Board), W. Begg (Otago Harbour Board), C. W. Tyler (Mayor of Rangiora), W. A. Ott (Bluff Harbour Board, Invercargill City Council, Invercargill Chamber of Commerce, and Southland Progress League), J. S. Barnett (Christchurch City Council), H C. Harley (Nelson Progress League), G. H. Andrew (Timaru Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce), J. Manson (Hanmer), A. R. Thompson (shipping interests), T. Charters (Canterbury Progress League), and the director (Mr J. J. W. Pollard). The annual report and directors' report, which were published in "The Press" on Thursday, were adopted, after a good deal of discussion on some items. The report of the treasurer, Mr C. H. Clibborn, showed that there was an excess of expenditure over income of £174 15s 7d, which, he said, had been partly influenced by the change in the incidence of the association's financial year from March to September. Membership receipts for the year ended September 30 totalled £912 17s lOd. The biggest items of expenditure were: Salary, £399; rent and services, £169; travelling expenses, £126; printing and stationery, £lO7.

An amendment to the rules, which was approved, provided for representation on advisory committees of tourist, accommodation, or transport units, on the payment of the £25 annual membership fee. The executive council of the association has approved of the setting up of the advisory committees at Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin, Invercargill, and Blenheim. This was approved by the association. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the executive in Greymouth, on a date still to be decided.
