ELLESMERE SHOW PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES Trophies won at the recent show of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association were presented to the successful exhibitors at a dance in the Leeston Town Hall by Mrs P. V. Bailey, wife of the president. A pleasant evening was spent dancing to music played by Lambie's Band. Mr R. H. Ford was master of ceremonies, and prizes for a Monte Carlo dance were won by Miss Coe and Mr McLachlan. In a short speech the president said that the recent show had been a record in every respect except the attendance. Although the association had recently rejected a proposal to change the day of the show from Thursday to Saturday, he thought the idea would have to be considered again in the light of recent changes. Mr Bailey thanked the judges and all who had helped to make the show successful. Professor E. R. Hudson Director of Canterbury Agricultural College, emphasised the value of agricultural and pastoral shows and referred particularly to the demands made upon those who loked after farm animals and prepared them for exhibition. In these days of rapid change and modification of ideas, there was a tendency toward lack of care and attention, but if a I person hoped to meet with a measure of success he must put the welfare of the stock before his own comfort and convenience. Mr A. N. Grigg, M.P., said that shows had a greater influence than many people realised on the standard of stock maintained Inr any country. He was convinced that- if the exhibitions were discontinued there would soon follow a decline in the quality of farm stock and thid would be reflected in a lessened demand for the country's exports and a consequent lowering of prices, An overwhelming proportion of'the Dominion's income from exports came from primary produce and it was therefore' very important to maintain the highest possible standard. Shows should be supported by the whole community and not merely by the exhibitors and those interested in stock.
A list of the trophy winners has already been published.
