DRUNKEN DRIVERS

TO THB EDITOR OF & THE PRESS. ' Sir, —Of drunken drivers, are there not two distinct classes In the first; fortunately, are to be found the majority: those who offend through carelessness, recklessness, cocksureness 01 folly. It the second, are the drinkI diseased—those in whom "the drink takes the drink" (methylated spirits or any other kind), and will not be "deterred." For the first class one can quite believe that the experience, or even the prospect, of consecutive week-ends in gaol or police cells instead of out on the roads, might have the desired effect. But, for the second, such a punishment would certainly be just as useless as long prison terms have proved to be. For such drivers (and all such drink-diseased) we need a drink-hospital, with scientific treatment, arid release on probation only. Hitherto my prohibition friends have opposed this: but cannot they, and others, now see its necessity? The drink in him, such a driver will care nothing for lack of licence, lack of car, or prospect of any cell. If he wants to drive, he will simply commandeer a car and then heaven help the public, if they will not first help themselves. —Yours, etc., B. E. BAUGHAN. Akaroa, November 4, 1938.
