MEETINGS IN VICTORIA SQUARE
to m cbitob or r*» pbbm. Sir, —I was very pleased to notice on Friday night that the ban on political meetings in Victoria square had at last been lifted, and offer my praise to the City Council for its progressive policy. It should not be long now before the right of assembly in Cathedral square, too, can again be asserted. some years ago Victoria square was a recognised and popular forum for political discussion, but the City Council of the day', following the construction of the Bowker fountain. Imposed a ban on meetings there, the pretext being that the meetings would damage the lawn. That it was a pretext has since been proved by the functioning there of religious organisations without let or hindrance, and both parties on the council must share the guilt.
More important than even considerations of. traffic is the right of the people to open meetings and free assembly for the discussion of the vital matters affecting all. and I sincerely hope the ban on meetings .in Cathedral square will follow the opening of the old forum.—Yours, etc.. C. F. SAUNDERS. October 16. 1938.
