THE LICENSING POLL
SATURDAY’S VOTING
LARGE majority for CONTINUANCE
LITTLE INTEREST TAKEN
Interest in the licensing poll was at this election somewhat obscured by the General Election, and little was heard of the issues. Figures are not yet complete, but it is amply evident that there* will be no change this time. Ike poll was the sixth at which the there issues, national continuance, State purchase and control, and national prohibition, have had to be decided. He figures so far available—there are 15 districts still to come—show that votes lor prohibition are outweighed about two to one by votes for continuance The vote for State control this tiane is already larger by a good m? than it has been since this issue was placed before the electors.
The individual polls in the Christchurch districts are not yet available, but details of those in which the count has been finished are given below. The following table shows the state ei the poll as present, compared with those at the previous four polls:
Continu- State Prohibiance. Control. tion. M 22 .. 282,669 35,727 300,791 1925 .. 299,590 56,037 319,450 1928 .. 373,692 64,276 294,453 1935 .. 521,167 57,499 243,091 1938* .. 389,803 67,988 186,198 •These were the • final totals on Saturday evening, with. 15 districts to come.
for the Christchurch licensing district, which comprises the electorates of Christchurch North, Christchurch South, and Christchurch East, the only complete return on Saturday evening was for Christchurch South. For the other two electorates the advance figures from individual booths ram» into the returning officer for the licensing district. Mr T. W. Reese, in such an unorganised form that it was impossible to assemble the figures into districts. The result will consequently not be available until the official count of votes is‘made, beginning to-day.

DISTRIBUTION OF SEATS
ISLANDS AND PARTY ALLEGIANCE
REMARKABLE BALANCE SHOWN'
A remarkably even balance of support for the Government was maintained in both the North Island and the South Island. Although Labour has lost 022& scat in the aggregate, the National Party has increased its representation by five seats. Labour and National each won a seat previously-held by the Country Party and a seat occupied by Independents with party leanings. Under the electoral boundaries revision, the South Island lost Chalmers, won for the first time by Labour at the last election. Oroua, in the North Island, held by a Nationalist, was also abolished, and the two newly-created seats, near Auckland and Wellington, were both won by Labour. On the present position of the polls, the representation of the two islands (including Maori electorates) is shown in the following table, with the comparative figures after the 1935 election:
With the Independents ignox-ed by the electors in electorates where threecornered fights were staged, the suggestion can hardly be advanced that the proportion of* seats held by the two parties is not balanced. M party representation in Parliament were according to the total vote gained by each party in the election, the strength of the parties would be altered, with more seats going to the National Party. The approximate percentage of the total Dominion vote gained by each party, the number, of seats equivalent to that percentage, and the actual number of seats at present held are as follows, the vote for the Independents being discarded as entitling them to one seat only:—
