Miss Alice Wilson and Mr Harold Garland (Auckland), who have been staying with Mrs G. Innes-Jones (June street), have returned north. Miss Nan Macfarlane (Sydney) is staying with Mrs T, R. Rhodes (Hadlow Grange). As part of the celebrations of the Automobile Association (South Canterbury), to mark its twenty-fifth anniversary, an “At Home’’ was held in the clubrooms (Sophia “ treet), which were tastefully decorated for the occasion The guests were received by Mr W. J. Foote and Mrs Foote. A musical programme, arranged by Miss Marjorie Bowler, was greatly enjoyed by the large number who were present. Those who contributed items were Mrs A. G. Williamson, Miss Bowler, Miss MacCartie, Mrs L. Wood, Mrs Fahey, Miss June Kerr, Mr Inglis Tpdd, and Mr J. W. Wood. Miss Bowler was accompanist. A decision to form a girls’ cricket club was made at a meeting held in the rooms of the Young Men’s Christian Association, Mrs P. C. Vinnell presiding. It was reported that the Timaru Borough Council had granted the use of Russell square, and that Mr' V. Hahn had agreed to act as coach. An offer to allow her garden to be used for a function, with the object of raising funds, had been received from Mrs S. Arthur. Miss S. King was elected vice-president of the club, and Miss R. Johnstone secretary. A street collection taken up to assist the, funds of the St. John Ambulance Association resulted in the sum of £9B 7s being collected, compared with £Bl 6s last year. Miss Mabel Tubb, who is to be married this month, was entertained at a kitchen afternoon party by Mrs W, Tubb (Roslyn terrace), the bride-elect receiving many useful gifts. Musical items were contributed by Misses M. and T. Tubb and Mrs Morrison.
-CHILDREN’S PARTY
A very successful concert was held in the Church Hall, South Brighton, the success being due to Mesdames L. Chamberlain and L. Brown, who Were responsible for the training of the chil-' dren. Mr Len Brown was stage manager. Bouquets were presented'to Mrs L, Chamberlain, L. Brown, andjJf. McDougall by Joan Watts, Zoe Fisher, and Gloria Trainer on behalf of'the Church Extension Committee.
Items were given by Jocelyn Crammer, Brenda Christensen, Iris Higgins, Molly Walsh. Pat Alexander, Audrey Foster, Marie Green, Joy Rhodes, Joan Watts, Ross Kitchenham, Dorothy Kitchenham, Mary Horridge, Helen King, Greta Douglas. Those taking part in nursery rhymes and choruses were Marlene McDougall, Jean Melhuish, Noeline Lloyd, Margery Rhodes, Gaynor Skudder. ST. DAVID’S GUILD
j GRANDMOTHERS ENTERTAINED
Grandmothers of the congregation of St. David’s Church were entertained by members of St. David’s Ladies Guild at their monthly meeting. Mrs G. L. Taylor presided, and welcomed the grandmothers, presenting each with a posy of flowers. Songs were sung by Mesdames Filer, Lariyon, Leslie, Sloan, and W. Weath-. erhead and a play was presented by Mesdames Leslie, Bowden, Torrance, Hutton. D. Smith, and Weatherhead. Mrs R, Hutton recited, and Mrs H. Weatherhead was accompanist. Afternoon tea was served by guild members. , , „ Prizes were presented as follows:. — Oldest grandmother present. Mrs Hunter; most grandchildren. Mrs Johnston; most great grandchildren, Mrs McDowall.
ANNIVERSARY DANCE
The Imperial Dance Club celebrated the success of its first year by holding an anniversary dance at the home of the director, Mr K. T. Starkey. The dance room was gaily decorated with paper streamers and monograms m purple and gold, the club’s colours. _ Novelty dances were won by Miss Eileen Leathwick and Mr Guy Buck, Miss Lilian Gunns and Mr Robert Heaney, and a lucky number competition was won by Miss Fanny Smith. It was announced that officers for the year would be:—Club leader, Mr Maurice Poore; deputy-leader. Miss Dorothy Partridge; general committee, Misses Lucille Epps, Elsie Simpson, and Doris Jane, Messrs Duncan McDonald, Aubrey Mcllroy, and Harry Hannah; executive council. Misses Joy Henderson and Ethel Harris and Mr Geoffrey Baker. , Among those present were Mr and Mrs K. T. Starkey, Misses Dorothy Partridge. Lucille Epps, Elsie Simpson, Doris Jane, Joy.
