There is at present a pronounced shortage of' 1, oranges in Dunedin, and the wholesale stores have been cleaned out for same time. A shipment is due by the Waitaki this week, which should relieve the position'temporarily. It is, however, doubtful whether the full requirements will be forthcoming, as latterly shipments have been much below the quantities ordered. No real reason for the shortage can be advanced in Dunedin; yields were up to standard in Australia, and the quality of the fruit excellent. Before a shipment leaves Australia, the Government distributing centre is advised of the requirements, but each shipment that has been unloaded in Dunedin has been considerably short of those requirements—with no explanation given why this should be so. The season for navel oranges is nearing its end,' hut their place is being taken by the various seeded varieties, orchard returns of which were as heavy as the navels.
