OBITUARY
MR JOHN EVANS
In the death of Mr John Evan*. well-known Welsh colonist, the Welsh 'T' community has suffered the loss of a- \ wise counsellor and friend. Mr Evans Vi# arrived in Christchurch on Christmas -fj £ Eve. 1879. He was a native of Pontypridd. South Wales. •} His proudest claim was being a mem- . - ber of Caradog Roberts’s famous choir ‘ that won international fame at the Crystal Palace. London in the late ' ’seventies of last century. For several years. Mr Evans conducted a general store and bakery in ' St. Albans lane. He was a member of the first staff of the Dominion Yeast Company, secretary of the Master - Bakers’ Association for more than 20 years, and at the time of his death' he was chairman of the St. Albans ■ Money ClubMr Evans was a life member of the present Cambrian Society having held' the chief offices and was highly re- -J spected amongst all sections with whom he came in contact j One of his sons was the brilliant u Merivale football player.
