RACING AND TROTTING
SOUTHLAND NOTES TWO-YEAR-OLDS FOR RICCARTON PREPARATIONS FOR GORE rTHE PRESS Special Service.J INVERCARGILL, October 13. The Stonynurst-bred stallion, Straight Course, has been accepted for use under the -remounts scheme in Western Southland. He is at present at Mataura. In Viking. Ortyx. and Dark Flight, the Kiverton owner, Mr D. M. Tweedie, has excellent prospects of a successful seascn. A patient policy is being adopted with Ortyx. Viking will not be far from hiu best when next produced as the racing he had at Wingatui improved him. Dark Flight has only to train on to rank with the best of his ase at present racing. Koya! Huntsman is a newcomer to C. Low's team, and he will appear at Gore next week. He is in solid condition, but is rather nervous. By Pink Coat he is out of the Solferino mare. Little Sister, and a couple of seasons back he qualified with the Birchwood hounds. J. R. Cochrane's team at Gore Includes two novices. Canary and Green Locket, and both are to race next week. Green Locket is a four-year-old by Waipounamu from Lucy Locket. Chirp, who was placed in the Trial Handicap on the first day at Wingatui, is a three-year-old filly by Full Feather, also from Lucy Locket. Cintilla and Boswell weie restricted to easy work this morning. Cintilla as a result of his good form at Wingatui. is now in strong favour for Gore. There is no certainty that Boswell will start at Gore. Peony Rose and Silkwood have both been attracting attention by their work at Riverton. Peony Rose was one of the most consistent graduates from the hack ranks produced last term, and she is well placed at Gore next week. Silkwood is a hack likely to improve on anything she has yet shown in public. The two-year-olds. Mondello and Royal Monev. wtl Iboth be kept going with a view'to racing at Riccarton at the cuo meeting, while it is also likely that Dark Flight will make this trip. IMPORTED HORSE WINS DOUBLE FOR SICK OWNER (By CARBINE.) Two highly-popular successes were those of Beau Livre and Royal Star II at Masterton. Both horses belong to Mr W. Higgins, a steward of the Wellington Racing Club, who is lying ill in London. Mr Higgins flew to England recently to receive medical attention, and he is expected to leave on his return to New Zealand ne*xt Thursday. It was a very pleasing cablegram Mr Higgins's representatives were able to send him on Wednesday evening. Beau Livre looks a very good two-year-old. and Royal Star II is an English .galloper Mr Higgins bought during one of his not infrequent visits to th= Old Country. Royal Star 11. a flve-year-od by Vesington from Royal Gala," showed speed in hisi Masterton race (which was only His second in New Zealand) and stayed on solidly. The race was merely b six furlong sprint, and the opposition was weak, but Royal Star II will improve and should win more. races. His backers got a great price at Masterton.

Toolamba Nursery—Second division: Aranui, Birkenella. Othello was scratched from the cup at 12.24 yesterday. Tuckerbox wrenched a fetlock during the running of the Coongy Handicap, in which he ran a dead-heat with Queen of Song for third place, and as a result will not start in the cup.

Won by a length and a half; third horse three lengths away. THE STEWARDS' HANDICAP G-.Y CHOU GOOD TYPE (By CARBINE.) A Canterbury Jockey Club's Stewards' Handicap horse who made a very good impression by the manner in which he won at Masterton is Gay Chou, the Gay Lothario gelding Mr W. Devon brought over from the Commonwealth last season. Gay Chou has come on nicely with recent racing. He is a very serviceable sprinter and the right type to win a Stewards' Trentham events should provide better tests than he has been given yet in New Zealand.' but I think he is certain to be among the early favourites for the big Riccartoji sprint.
TURF GOSSIP At Motukarara The Banks Peninsula Racing Club has received a very' satisfactory list of nominations for its spring meeting on October 29. the total for eight events being 169, as against 179 last year. The principal event, the J. F. Buchanan Memorial Handicap, has attracted several New Zealand Cup candidates, including the North Islanders, The Buzzer. Malagigi, and Padishah, while in the Le Bons Handicap several Stewards' Handicap candidates are included. Home Again Cerne Abbas and The Wrecker arrived at Riccarton yesterday from Sydney, and are to be treated to a spell. Wotan's Programme Advice from New Plymouth states that Wotan has been allowed to forgo his Trentham engagements, and his next race will be in the New Zealand Cup. Rchandicapped Winners at Ma'sterton have been rehandicapped for the Wellington meeting as follows:—Wainui Handicap: Arctic King 9-4, Lucullus Lad 9-4. Rimutaka Handicap: Royal Star II 8-9, Hagen 8-9. Shorts Handicap: Gay Chou 9-5. October Handicap: Nereus 8-6. The Inflation—Divola filly in the Wellesley Stakes will race as Equity. At Masterton on Thursday
Hagen made it two wins on end when he won the Trial Stakes at Masterton on Thursday, for which he was a very staunch favourite. He trailed the pacemaker, Daregain, to the distance, and then fought off late challenges from Punarua and Colfort. The first and second Horses ooth. ran good races and look likely to carry on. Colfort was unlucky. He missed getting a good position early and was giving Hagen at least five lengths' start at the home turn. He finished brilliantly, just missing second money. Hagen's known class makes Colfort's performance look good. Kindly finished well for fourth, and Daregain. having his first start, was a promising fifth.
Trainer Opens Account The Vallance Memorial Handicap provided T. R. George, the leading trainer of last season, with his first winner for the new term, Galteemore forcing his way to the front a furlong from home to beat Dorado by a neck, with heads between Hunting Cat, Siegmund, and Boomerang. Galteemore lay in the middle of the field most of the way and stayed on solidly. Dorado and Hunting Cat were always handy, but Siegmund had to come from the tail of the field and was finishing fast. Master Cyklon and Liane tired after assisting with the pace for a mile. A New Role Lucullus Lad proved himself a good mixer when he won the Waipipi Handicap of six furlongs. He and Ivar were on terms two furlongs from home, where Dungarvan -also challenged: but the long Opaki straight suited Lucullus Lad. who finished full of running to win by two lengths from the outsider Export, who ran a good race in this company. Race Call, who 'was cut off.at the start, was next, and Ivar was a close fourth. Ivar did not thrive on the trip and lightened up a lot.
Family Ability Hinerawe, the four-year-old daughter of Oratrix v and least fancied of T. R. George's pair in the race, won the Farewell Handicap. Well placed at the turn, she went to the front at the distance and 'won easily from Sunny Blonde, who made, all the - pace. Mather-in-Law was third and Raroa fourth. The class was poor, but Hinerawe Avon •well. Complete Recovery The many friends of Mr Gerald Stead will be glad to learn that he has made a complete and remarkably rapid recovery from the serious accident that befell him on the way to the Matamata races on July 23 last. Mr Stead suffered a fracture of a bone at the base of the spine, and was in the Waikato Hospital and a private nursing home in Auckland for some weeks. He is, however, now out and about again, and was performing his customary duties at the Avondale meeting. Returned Home
The brilliant New Zealand performer Stretto, after an absence of several months in Sydney, returned to Auckland this week by the Wanganella. Stretto more than paid expenses in Australia with earnings of £9OO, and success instead of a narrow defeat in the Craven Plate at Randwick last week would have made the trip very profitable. She is to rejoin R. S. Bagby's stable, and be prepared for racing at the summer carnival at Ellerslie. A Hastings Juvenile Tableau, winner of the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie, was bred by her owner, Mr A. F. Symes, of Hastings, owner of Gay Son. She is a shapely bay filly by Beau Pere from Painted Screen, by Leighton from Valvate, by Feramorz from Shrill, by Llangwm. Shrill was an imported mare, who won the Thompson Handicap at Trentham in 1917.
A Freak Wager It is not very often that a bookmaker looks ahead two years when offering odds on a race, but, according to the English "Sporting Life." a member of the ring has laid Mr Adair Dighton, the "Special Commissioner" of that paper, 250 to 1 that he cannot name the Derby winner of 1940. Mr Dighton, in accepting the odds, has nominated - a chestnut colt by Blenheim which was catalogued for sale at the Doncaster sales this year. The youngster, foaled in March, was bred by Captain Farr., of the Worksop Manor Stud, and he was the only son of Blenheim offered at Doncaster. He is bred very much on the same lines /A

GREAT RACE EXPECTED WELLESLEY STAKES (By Carbine.) The race for the Wellesley Stakes, to be run at Trentham next Thursday, should be one of the best and most interesting two-year-old contests held in New Zealand in recent years. At present 24 remain in the field, but that number seems sure to be heavily reduced before starting time. Probably there will not be a pronounced favourite unless one is found as a result of track work on the eve of the meeting. Results to date suggest that the five leading two-year-olds are Master Hotspur, Winning Rival, Beau Livre, Nora Gregor, and Anopheles. Master Hotspur and Winning Rival are the South Island cracks, Anopheles is Auckland's best, Nora Gregor appears to be the pick of Hawke's Bay, and Beau Livre is the elect of Trentham. The latest winner is Beau Livre, a brown colt by Beau Pere from Pass Book. He is a neat, smart-looking colt, and at Masterton defeated Nora Gregor comfortably. Nora Gregor may not have been seen to the fullest advantage as she was not ridden by an experienced jockey, and lost valuable ground on the home turn.
as that great horse Donatello 11, being by Blenheim from Racla, by Clarissimus. He was purchased at Doncaster by Miss Dorothy Paget, who gave 7500 guineas for him. Miss Paget, who has not met with the success she deserves with her yearling purchases, paid 15,000 guineas last year for the Fairway—Golden Hair colt Colonel Payne, who has yet to win a race. Hot Box's Breeding The awarding of the Great Northern Guineas to Hot Box has given the family of the English-bred mare, Pebble 11, its first classic success. Pebble 11. a daughter of Rock Flint, threw Iceball. her first foal, to Valkyrian in 1925, and she has produced nine other progeny, none of whom has achieved any distinction on the Turf.
Iceball- went early to the stud, in 1929, Hot Box being her sixth foal. Her first foal, Sastrugi, won at the end of her two-year-old season, but she did nSt race again. Her sister Snowball did not win until the end of her third season, but as a five-year-old she came into her own. winning seven races, and she won 10 events in all. A younger brother. Sir Quex, raced in Australia for Mr W. R. Kemball without adding anything to the family record. The next one to race was Hot Box. a son of Cape Horn, who won three races and was twice placed at two years old. He won two handicaps at the Auckland summer meeting, and was very narrowly beaten by Calorie in the Calliope Handicap at the Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting in January. However, on the second day, in the Hobson Handicap, he easily turned the tables on Calorie, who beat him again in the Juvenile. Handicap at the Waikato Racing Club's summer meeting. Hot Box, who has opened his three-year-old account so auspiciously, was bred by Mrs I. Barnes, and he is owned by Mxs M. F. Stone. _ ,
TROTTING NOTES Reminder Acceptances for the Oamaru Trotting Club's meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Monday. Logan Derby Arrives Logan Derby, engaged in the New Zealand Cup and other important events, arrived at Addington yesterday. His handicap for the New Zealand Cup was withheld pending the receipt of his recent racing records, but he has now been assessed on 2min lOsec for a mile, 2min 43sec for a mile and a quarter, and 4min 25sec for two miles. This will place him on 4min 25sec in the New Zealand Cup, a handy mark for a horse of his proved ability. He was the star performer at the Inter Dominion Championships held at Perth in 1936. and is by Globe Derby, the sire of Walla Walla, from Belle Logan, by Logan Pointer—Curfew Bell. The presence of Logan Derby is creating interest which will be increased when Lawn Derby arrives. The latter has been assessed on 2min 7sec for a mile? 2min 39sec for a mile and a quarter, and 4min 21sec for two miles. Southern Chief During last season Southern Chief, in J. J. Kennerley's stable, won three races and was "several times in the minor places; but this is a record that he is likely to beat during the present year. He is a fine stamp of pacer and a genuine stayer. Disappointing At one stage last season Aide de Camp gave promise of developing into one of the best class pacers, but he unaccountably lost all form and his effort? in public were not encouraging. Possibly it was only a temporary lapse and it is pleasing to note that lately he has been putting some of his old time dash into his work. There is nc doubt of the ability of this pacer and it is only a question of getting him right to win races. Stud News
Little Kewpic, the dam of War Buoy, has foaled a filly to Rey de Oro, and is on a visit to Gamble. A Gore Prospect The Winton trainer, W. Cosgrove. won the Balfour Trot at the Gore spring "meeting last year with Waitemata, and he appears to have excellent prospects of repeating his success in the same event this month with Grand Mogul's half-sister, Aspirant. She is trained at Winton, and is highly thought of. A Strenuous Season Master Potts was probably the most raced horse in Gtago and Southland last season. He contested no fewer than 24 races, but failed to win a race. The Jack Potts gelding ran some good races, and was unlucky running up against Waitemata at Winton and Aqua Bond at Invercargill. In each case he was runner-up. Consistent One of the most consistent pacers fn Southland last season was the Worthy Bond gelding Sydney Grand, who contested 12 races for a first, three seconds, and five thirds. He ran third to Waitemata and Seascape at his first start at Gore last October. His one success was gained at the Invercargill meeting in January, while he completed the season with three seconds on end. At his last start he covered a mile in 2min 14sec, and his best time for a mile and a half was 3min 25 2-ssec, recorded on the Gore course last February. . Sydney _ Grand was slow in finding his feet in most of his races, but he was staying on. He is only six years old, and, as he looks the type that will improve with age. he may have quite a good innings this season. He will reappear at Gore this month. Newcomers at Gore
Quite a few newcomers figure among the entries for the Gore Racing Club's spring meeting. Aspirant is a three-year-old filly by Llewellyn from Logan's Mission (dam of Grand Mogul), owned by Mr W. D. McLeod, of Mandeville, and trained at Winton by W. Cosgrove. Dewy Bell is a member of R Townley, jun.'s, teain at Wyndham. She is a six-year-old mare by Frank Dewey from Rona Bell, and races in the interest of her trainer in partnership with Mr C. G. Kirby. Honest Charlie, a five-year-old l geldini*. by Wellington Direct from Seaward Spot, is owned by Mr Chas. Smaill, and trained by G.Stevenson at Moa Flat. John Dale is a member of D. Kerr's Gore team, and will be known to -racegoers as Sunny Mac, under which name he raced last season. Night Nurse is another of the progeny of Our Nurse. She is a five-year-old i mare by Wellington Direct. She is owned and trained by G. Waite at Tapanui. Ripple Wave is a Central Otago representative trained at Omakau by.W. Paterson for Mr S. Matthews. She is a five-year-old mare by Brigand from Queen's Ceneral. Royal Bond is another of W. Cosgrove's team at Winton, and races in the interests of Mrs W. G. Clarke, Royal Bond is a four-year-old gelding by Worthy. Bond from Queen Dulse.
NOTES FROM EPSOM FINAL SPRINTS YESTERDAY CPHESS J.BSOCIJLTIO2T TELXGBAH.) AUCKLAND. October 13. The dirt track at Epsom was in good order this morning when speea in .the final sprints was the main feature of the work. Agnes Bingen was again the star performer, going Imin 3 l-ssec for the last half of a 2min 18sec mile. Bedford, who went 3min 28sec, the final half in lmin ssec. beat Silk Lady but in running 3min 29 2-ssec and 6 2-ssec, the daughter of Silk Thread drew attention to her future prospects With a sharp effort from the back, Fernbrook Lass beat Maunga Tangi and Lucky Love over two miles in 4min 40sec, the last three furlongs in 48sec. Trailing Kewpie's Triumph to the mile in 2min 22sec, Kewpie's Queen with a resolute finishing dash, got up to be level at the line, in 3min 28sec and her display -was very creditable. Post Haste and Petite Jewel went to the mile in 2min 23sec. to reach the mile and a half in 3min 30sec. " A mile in 2min 16sec, the first half in lmin 7sec, was the effort of Our Princess. Great Sonoma trotted to the mile in 2min 19sec, and although he made a break he completed the mile and a half in 3min 27 3-ssec. Inquiries have been made at Epsom for accommodation for three horses by Mr E. F. C. Hinds, which confirms the suggestion that Harold Logan although on an impossible mark, will race at the meeting.
