Fitama Memorial Cup The South Island Maori tournament took place on Saturday and was won by the Christchurch team, OtautahL Waihao (Morven) was runner-up. The Pitama Memorial Cup was presented to M. Phillips, captain of the winning team, by the Hon. R. Semple, who was present at the banquet which followed the games. Mr E. T. Tirikatene. member of Parliament for Southern Mapn. was also present. Although the standard of play in the tournament was superior to that of last year, it could be vastly improved on yet. In patches, individuals shewed up to great advantage; but the main essential, team work, was for the most part lacking. Wild throwing, long passes, and personal, con tact are keeping the Maori game below standard, and the game cannot improve unlil the players realise the value of the shortpassing and open game. i _ The 1939 tournament will be held at Temuka.
