COST OF LIVING
TO THK EDITOR OF THE THBSS. Sir,—l admire your correspondent "Working Man" for his outspoken comr ments on the cost of living. I was also led to believe that the Labour Government would help the worker, but all that the Government has done is to waste money on public works. What do we citizens care about the Homer tunnel or the short cut roads to the Coast. We want our industries in the cities built up so that our sons can become skilled tradesmen instead of
navvies. My tlirei* *ons were not brought into the world to be labourers, but the awful conditions introduced by the Russian ideas of the Labour Party have forced my sons away from home, and they are now living in camps in the backblocks,. I was also forced to leave my home to take up labouring work, and while I was away I let my house. I now nod that the Labour Government has prevented an owner from obtaining possession of his own home. The Fair Rents Act compels an owner to obtain a house for the tenant before he can get possession of his own home. Why should a working man who has been industrious and saved his money to buy a home not be able to get possession of it? The' Labour Government is out to make New Zealand a country full of "sooners"— people who would sooner sit on the hearth than be industrious. The men who want to get on and be decent citizens are not encouraged. Our young men are sent out into the backblocks to be trained as navvies and not encouraged to think for themselves. We do not want Russian methods in New Zealand and we do not want Socialism. I am glad that the National Party is out to give we workers our freedom and is out to help our children to become useful citizens instead of slaves.—Yours, etc., ANOTHER WORKING MAN. September 23 1938.
