ENCROACHMENT OF SEA AT REDCLIFFS
SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE
POSITION
The Mayor (Mr J. E. Tait) said at a meeting of the Sumner Borough Council last evening that the works committee had visited the waterfront at Redcliffs, where the residents between Simpson's corner and Beach street were having serious trouble with the threat of the encroaching seaThere were present, Crs. F. T. Eldridge, E. T. Chitty, J. L. Gant, E. A. M. Roberts, P. C. Fenwick, and C. E. Claydon.
It was considered that the only solution was the building of a stone wall well out from the present residences and the ultimate filling in for the construction of a road.
Cr. Eldridge moved that the engineer be asked to make an estimate of the cost of constructing a wall.
Cr. Chitty said that the special subcommittee appointed to go into the question of the construction of a saltwater swimming pool had not yet met, but he had been collecting data about the proposal. He had been told by Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., that it would be possible to get the labour on the same basis as the men working on the Al3 scheme.
The request of the Hedcliffs Burgesses* Association for the provision of marked pedestriari crossings . was referred to the traffic inspector. The numbering of houses was referred to the works committee, mention being made of the possibility of putting an unemployed man on to do the work. The danger of speeding cars on the main road was referred to the Highways Board. After representations from the Sumner School Committee it was decided to make a grant to the committee funds of the cost of the hire of the Town Hall.
The Canterbury Surf Association applied for a grant towards the cost of maintaining beach patrols on the beaches during the summer. It was decided to give £5 ss. The Commissiouer of Transport wrote advising that there was a proposal to issue learners' plates to newcar drivers, and asked if the council would support the project. It was decided to reply advising that the council was quite in accord with the suggestion. . ..* The Mayor reported on the conference of local bodies about the proposed Canterbury court at the Centennial Exhibition at Wellington. It was decided to support the proposal to have a Canterbury court, the council s share not to exceed £llO. The Mayor said that this cost would be spread over two years, and the first part would not come to charge during the present financial year.
