AIR DEFENCE OF NEW ZEALAND
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS NOT TAKEN
MINISTER DENIES RUMOUR ifubss »»»ociii'io>i ri^iaiiu.) DUNE.DIN, September 26, A denial of a rumour current in Wellington to-day that special air defence precautions were being taken by the Government at present was made by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) in an interview to-night. "There is no truth in the rumour," the Minister said., "as at present there is no set pf circumstances, that would .necessitate special precautionary air defence measures in New Zealand. ' ( The Goyernment certainly does not minimise the seriousness pf the situation in Europe, or its possible effect on our own position; but there is nothing just now to suggest a state of emergency here." The Minister emphasised th«t steady progress was being made with the Government's plans for the defence of the Dominion, which were linked up with the scheme of Empire defence, The three services, the Navy, the Army and the Air Force, were co-ordinated under the Council of Defence, .of which the Prime Minister was chairman, and this would ensure that if an emergency djd arise, each would be able to" play
its part effectively, and in proper relation to the others.
