SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Mrs W. Raymond (Pleasant Point), who has been staying with Mrs M. Sutherland (Le Cren street), is now the guest of Mrs Hugh Knubley (Albury): Miss True Neill, who was the guest of Mrs John Elworthy (Holme Station, Pareora), has returned to Dunedin.

Miss Zona Joyce, -who was staying with Miss Hazel Rule (Avenue road), has left for Wellington. Miss Gwenyth Evans (Maungati) has commenced training as a Karitane nurse at Christchurch. Dr. and Mrs McKellar (Dunedin), who were the guests of Mrs W. Raymond (Park lane), returned south yesterday. Mrs E. Inman (Cattle Valley) is spending a few days in Timaru.

FAREWELL GATHERING AT BARFIELD There was a large and representative • gathering at the Darfleld Memorial Hall to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs George Cridge and family, who are leaving Darfleld to reside in Christchurch. Speakers mentioned the interest and help Mr Cridge had always taken in the progress and welfare of the district. A presentation from residents was made by Mr Donald Gillanders, and Mr C. G. Jarman also made a presentation from St. Andrew’s Church. Items were given by Misses Margaret and Joan Clinton and Mr K. Perry. Miss Gwynn Oldridge was accompanist. Music for dancing was played by Mr A. Hart. Mr J. McLaughlin was master of ceremonies. CROQUET CLUB MEETS AT CHEVIOT The annual meeting of the Cheviot Croquet Club was held recently. Mr ,G. Brown presided. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory credit of £26. It was reported : that the club had a most successful year. The election of officers resulted: — Patronesses, Mesdames G. W. Forbes, D. McLaren, and T. Edridge; president, Mrs W. A. Elliott; vice-presi-dents, Mrs W. Hughes and Mrs J. Williams: honorary secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. T. Bead; auditor, Miss E. Cull; committee, Mesdames C. Ogden, G. Elliott, and L. Cone, Messrs G. Brown and G. Telfer.

TENNIS ANB CROQUET CLUB AT CUST

The annual meeting of the Cust Tennis and Croquet Club was held recently. Mr A. Ryde (president) presided.

The annual report showed that the club had had quite a successful season, the balance-sheet showing a credit. The following officers were' elected: —President,, Mr A. Ryde; vice-presi-dent, Mr C. Prebble; captain, Mrs A. Ryde; • vice-captain, Mr R. Lindsay; secretary, Miss M. Jackson; treasurer, Mr R. Lindsay; committee, Misses A. Jack and B. Wood. Messrs E. Henderson, W. Smith, and G. Wood. It was decided to hold the opening day on September 24.

GIFT PARTY Miss Dorothy Dailey was the guest of honour at an evening gift* party given oy Mr and Mrs H. R. Hfepburn at their home in Oxford street, Ashburton. A pleasant time was spent in games and competitions, the winners being Mrs J. Ford, Mbs F. Silcock, Miss B. Tilley, Messrs E. Tilley, A. Frew, and J. D. Storrier. Musical items were given by Mr A. Thomson. « ■■ ' ~ FANCY DRESS BALL CHILDREN’S FUNCTION AT METHVEN The annual children’s fancy dress ball was held In the Methven Town Hall on Thursday evening under the auspices of the Methven Anglican Church. No prizes were allotted this year, but each child was given a gift. In ( thanking those responsible for the organisation of the function, the vicar (the Rev. H. S. Harrison) spoke-of the work of Mesdames Claude Thompson and A. Lawrence in training the children. . . Cook’s orchestra played the music for the children’s dance, and for the adults dance, which followed. Mrs A. S. Kennedy played extras. Mr E. A. Fltzglbbon was master-of ceremonies. The church funds will benefit considerably through the function.
