ADDINGTON MARKET

——, SMALLER ENTRIES DECLINE IN BEEF VALUES The over-supply of entries in several sections of stock at recent sales was not marked yesterday, supplies being little more than requirements. The smaller entries of fat sheep yesterday assisted the market to steady, ‘ and there was a total clearance at from par to a shade better • values. In the fat cattle section there was a heavier entry, and the increased entry-brought back values by fully 20s. a head for .:.the best, medium-weight sorts and slightly s ’-more for heavy-weights.. Store sheep sold'lqdiiferently except for a few good pens of ewes.and lambs. Store wethers and wether hoggets were in slack demand. A few spring lambs sold at about 14d ppr lb. Vealers and fat pigs also met with a good market, and generally the sale was a satisfactory one. STOKE SHEEP The store sheep penning was slightly smaller than that of last week, totalling approximately 1700 head. There was little change in values. The feature of the entry was a line of 426 wether hoggets from Emu Plains. Culverden, well grown, with a good fleece of wool, and which had come through the winter well. They sold at the very reasonable price of 14s 3d to 14s 7d. A pen of ewe hoggets sold at 13s 7d. and some older, sorts at 18s. A small pen of forward wethers sold at 18s 3d. Ewes and lambs sold relatively well. One remarkable sale was of 78 ewes, practically all with twin lambs, the line being apparently drafted to minimise lamb troubles. These sold at 11s Id to 11s 6d, all counted. More backward ewes, with an average percentage of lambs, sold at 6s 9d. A' better line of 45 ewes with 67 lambs sold, at 13s, and a pen of 39 younger ewes, with 58 lambs, all tailed, at 14s 4d, all counted. There was little demand for forward wethers, which, can be bought reasonably in the fat pens. Representative sales were;— Hoggets—76 at 14s 3d, 426 at 14s 3d to 14s 7d. Ewes—44 at 18s. 86 at 13s 7d. 63 at 14s Ed, 128 at 16s 6d, 64 at 16s Id, 138 at 14s 4d. Ewes and Lambs—ll at 6s 9d, 110 at 11s 6d. 12 at 9s. 126 at 10s lid. 149 at 11s, 51 at 3s 9d, 84 at 13s to 14s 4d. all counted. Wethers—2o at 17s, 22 at 18s 3d. 121 at 17s Id, 20 at 17s 4d. FAT SHEEP The fat sheep entry comprised slightly more than 4000 head, compared with about 7000 last week. Quality was lacking, a big proportion of the entry comprising rough and unfinished sheep. There were a few good lines from South Canterbury, and sheep carried over from last week formed a not inconsiderable proportion of the penning. In the earlier ’ stages of the sale there were improved values compared with the previous week’s rates, but as the sale proceeded values settled down at very little change. The few outstanding pens of ewes and wethers were fully. Is better than a week ago, but there was little change in other classes. There was a fair showing of hoggets, but the quality was not impressive. An outstanding truck lot of 62 wethers from J. A. Kelso (Rakaia) averaged 33s 9d, eight making 35s 4d, and a line of 28-ewes from A. F. Marr (Methven). sold at 28s Id. the 52 in the truck averaging 27s 3d. FAT CATTLE The entry in the fat cattle section comprised 542 head. about 100 more than the normal requirements of the. week. Unfortunately from 10 to 15 per cent, of the total was little better than rubbish, and would have been flatteringly accommodated in ■ the store pens. For the 400 head of good and medium quality cattle there was quite a sound demand, although at distinctly lower values than the rates of a week ago. The sale opened at about 25s to 30s a head lower for heavy-weight steers, up to 20s for medium-weight prime, and to 15s for cows, of which there were some good sorts forward. There was an improvement as the sale progressed, and the relapse mentioned was reduced to an average of about 20s. There were . some excellently finished pens from various parts of the province and outside, good lines coming forward from the Totara Flat district of the West Coast, the Peninsula, and Soulh Canterbury. Good beef made up to 41s per 1001 b, tops to 435, heavy weights 35s to 395, secondary 34s to 365, and rough down to 275. Amongst the good lines of steers was one from W. S. Strange (Tinwald), the 16 selling at an average of £l6 18s sd. Top price for steers was £l9 12s 6d. A truck lot of steers from Kennedy Bros. (Totara Flat) sold at an average of £l7 7s 6d. Cows from Jno. Thacker (Okain’s Bay) sold at up to £l4 12s 6d, and heifers at £l4 2s 6d. Values were as under: — • Extra prime heavy steers to £l9 12s 6d. Prime heavy steers. £ls 15s to £l7 ss. VEALERS The vealer penning was of indifferent quality, and consisted mostly of small calves. There was an absence of runners. and consequently this class brought good prices. Otherwise the market showed ittle change on that of last week. Values were:— Best runners, to £9 13s 6d. Heavy runners. £6 IBs 6d to £7 17s Gd. Medium runners, £4 3s 6d,to £5 18s 6d. STORE CATTLE There was little in the store cattle market to attract attention, the penning comprising for the most part .cows of indifferent to moderate 1 quality. Straight lines of well-grown steers were absent. The cows were of all breeds, but anything fit for fattening was in demand, the best of them making up to £5 12s 6d. A pen of eight Jersey calves sold at £2 14s to £2 16s. For the poor assortment forward the sale was a satisfactory one. DAIRY CATTLE There was a fairly heavy penning in the dairy cattle section, and very little quality was included. The sale was a depressed one, values being down by about ICs a head. Best prices for cows and heifers was about £ll ss. A number of late calvers ranged from £6 to £B, but there was not much demand for these. FAT PIGS The porker entry was scarcely sufficient for butchers’ requirements, which shortage has been a feature at the opening of the sale for some weeks. The sale commenced at better prices than those of last week, and continued firmer throughout the auction. Choppers were in medium supply,. and again met with good competition. Baconers were forward in heavier* numbers, and the market was easier, values receding by 2s tp 3s a head, except in the case of first quality pigs, which maintained last week’s rates. Values were as under:— . . Choppers, £3 Is to £7 Is. Light porkers, 39s 6d to 49s 6d. Medium porkers, 50s 6d to 57s 6d. Heavy porkers, £3 4s 6d to £3 12s 6d. Extra heavy baconers, £5 Is 6d to £5 9s 6d. ‘ Average price per lb. 7d to 7Jd. STORE PIGS The entry of store pigs was of similar size to that of last week, being of normal size for this time oi year. Competition was again strong and all classes met with a very satisfactory sale. Values were:— Small weaners, 13s to 16s,’ best 17s to 21s. Slips. 21s to 245. Small stores, 25s to 28s. Medium stores. 29s to 325. Large - stores. 33s ’to 38s. STORTFORD LODGE (press association telegram.) HASTINGS, September 7. There was keen competition for quality lines of beef at the Stortford Lodge today. The yarding comprised approximately 200 head of cattle, including fats, stores, and dairy sorts. Butchers were afforded a good selection, and with the exception of a Manawatu buyer competition was confined to local buyers. Extra prime heifers, realised £l2 12s 6d. Top price for prime quality.- cow beef was £ll 11s. There was riot any ox beef Pe Dairy heifers ranged, -from £4 11s to £7 12s 6d. and cows to. £4 12s 6d. About 3000 store sheep were penned, including mixed drafts from Gisborne and Wairoa. The market was deadband prices for hoggets eased by -about Is a head on last week’s rates. y.alues for tops in wether hoggets were 20s 3d. Store ewes were in poor demand; ’ fattening sorts ranging from 5s to 9s. Wethers met an improved market, prices, reaching 25s -d for two-tooths. and medium sorts from 22s 6d to 24s 3d. Fat sheep met with a keen demand, but values eased slightly. Good prime Southdown ewes made 21s 9d to 2Ss Id. others 19s 6d to 2os. A few wethet-s were penned, quality lines reaching 27s 6d to 335. There were few heavy grades In the entry of 213 fat cattle at the Burnside stock sale to-day, the yarding comprising mainly medium bullocks - .
