CELEBRATION OF CENTENNIAL

MONEY TO BE RAISED MEETING OF LOCAL COMMITTEE Arrangements for the centennial celebrations in Oamaru were discussed at a meeting of the representatives of the Oamaru Borough Council and the Waitaki County Council, comprising the local centennial committee, on Tuesday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr L. J. K. Familton) was elected chairman of the committee the County Clerk (Mr R. K. Gardiner) secretary, and the Town Clerk (Mr J Branthwaite) treasurer. Other members oresent were Messrs E. D. Watts and J. C. Kirkncss (Oamaru Borough Council), and James Rodman (chairman), R. B. Meek, and S. M. Taylor (Waitaki County Council). “The first thing we ought to do is to find out what subsidy, if any, we are going to get,” said the Mayor. “We should know this before we prepare any plans for the memorial Plunket and rest room.” “It will only be a small amount,” said Mr Rodman. “No word has yet been received," The Mayor said that the local contributions for the rest room were com-, prised of a grant of £I6OO from the Waitaki County Council, and £BOO from the Oamaru Borough Council, 1 which had also given the land for the site, valued at £BOO. A suggestion was made by Mr Rodman that the Plunket Society and other women’s organisations should be asked to assist. Money could also be raised by queen carnivals and galas. It was decided to ask the Plunket Society, the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, the local branch of the Women’s Institute, the Beautifying Association, and the Treeplanting Association each to appoint a representative, to the committee. It was further decided to write to the Justice Department asking if arrangements could be made to enable the committee to obtain the land from the department for the memorial rest room as soon as possible. The next meeting of the committee will be held on September 23. ANNUAL LEVY PROPOSED COST OF GARDENS TENNIS COURTS MEADOWBANK CLUB’S SUPPORT An annual levy of 2s 6d from each player affiliated to the North Otago Lawn Tennis Association to meet the cost of the grass tennis courts in the Oamaru Municipal Gardens, was supported at the annual meeting of the Meadowbank Tennis Club on Tuesday evening. The levy is proposed in ..notice of motion to be considered at the annual meeting of the association. The president (Mr L. J. South) presided over a good attendance. The idea of the, levy was to give the association some fund- towards the cost of the grass courts at the Oamaru Gardens, said Mr South. The association expected some help from tennis players, said Mr P. Mulligan. At present about £ISOO had been spent on the courts. The levy would pay off the present indebtedness 'and establish a fund for the upkeep of the courts. A motion that the club was in favour of the levy was carried and the delegate to the association’s annual meeting was instructed to support the proposal.
