RACING AND TROTTING

SOUTHLAND NOTES

SEVERAL HORSES IN WORK [THE PRESS Special Service.] 1 INVERCARGILL, September 7. Recall ■will be the first of T. E. , Pankhurst’s team to race this season, and he will appear at Geraldine. He has been getting through good work since he resumed. Recall showed a great turn of > speed in his races last season, but did not carry it far. R. E. McLellan intends taking Millord, Paladino, Jedburgh, Doubleack, and Boswell to the Geraldine meeting.' All members of his team have done well since the Otago Hunt meeting, and Milford and .Paladino galloped a mile on the outside of the course proper this morning in 56 2-ssec. the last half in 57sec. It was an easy effort for the pair, but showed them to be well forward. Jedburgh displayed a good turn of speed at the Otago Hunt meeting and is a likely novice. Doubleack Is all tne better for the outing he had. Boswell has not raced since he won at Gore last spring, but his track work indicated that he is fast approaching his best. On the. extreme outer this morning he attracted attention by the , manner in which he ran half a mile in 55sec with a Straightcourse filly, a half-sister to Paladino. A newcomer to T. E. Panldiurst s team is a two-year-old who will race under the name of. Tissue Paper. He is a good type of colt by Full Feather from Sunny Paper. • . No horse at Invercargill has furnished as well as Triple Cone, and he has grown into a very fine type of four-year-old. This Rosenor gelding has shown brilliant speed on the tracks, and while he has won only one event, he has only to race solidly to prove a good winner this term. A Consistent Performer Amelita is now under the care of F. Yoight. The Australian-bred mare has met with more-, illriuck. than most horses; but she feorhpUed a very consistent record last season. In. small fields she has always shown up. as she appears to dislike racing in a big field. Ardmayle and the two-year-old colt Bulldog are at presept at Invercargill. Ardmayle is in good order for early racing and the. juvenile has furnished into a likely type. He is by British Empire from Ruthless, and he hit out well when sprinted down the straight this morning. He is to be produced at Wingatui next month; . Wild Career’s return has been delayed because of an injury he received in a paddock; but it is not serious, and he is to resume shortly. Likely Novices Peony Rose and Silkwood have both returned to the tracks at Riverton. Their trainer. A. McKay, has three novices in work. Silkwood has been in light work all the winter, and he will be in good order for early racing. This Woodend mare was one of the most likely novices produced last season, and is capable of improving further. Peony Rose is one of the most consistent fillies raced for some time, and last term she won races and was six times placed. She is likely to be one of the best sprinters in the south this- season. Novices m the stable include the two-year-old half-sister by Iliad to Sailing Lady, being out of-that good race mare Set Sail. This filly is a neat type and is engaged in early classics, A four-year-old by Balboa from Some Form ranks as a sister to Ashaway. while a three-vear-old filly by Nigger Minstrel from Charraaine completes the string. The last-mentioned pair are closely related as their dams, Charmaine (a good winner) and Some Form, are by Some Boy II from Fairform, dam of Tauramai and Rin Tin Tin.

NEW BRIGHTON T.C.

MEETING ON SATURDAY The Minister for Internal Affairs has granted the necessary permission for the New Brighton Trotting Club to hold. its postponed meeting on Saturday, and while meetings that have been transferred from one date to another have not always proved successful, this one will probably provide more of interest than if it had been held last week, when track and weather conditions would not have provided a fair trial for horses, and would have been very unpleasant for drivers. A few days’ fine weather has resulted in the track being again at its best, and while the sting will be out of the ground, there will be every encouragement for horses, to hit out in their best style. The postponement will be of benefit to many horses, and the extra week’s work will result in fitter horses, and consequent more exciting racing. The Improvers The Improvers’ Handicap will open the programme, and the 3min 43sec class for unhoppled trotters will be contested with the greatest zest by the 18 horses engaged. • Princess Beverley was the early, favourite, atjd was looked on as something of a certainty but during the last week there has been a leaning towards Axiom, Tommy ;Quy, Gaynor, and Real Red, and while. Princess Beverley may still be the favourite, she will -be at a reasonable price. Tommy Guy, now in J, Bryce’s stable, may be the second choipe, and next should be Kilmorick and Gaynor. Three-year-olds in Action The appearance of the three-year-olds, Aldershot and Zingarrie, in the Belfast Handicap will add-a lot of interest to this race, and if either, of the pair is to have a chance in the Derby it should show up here. Zingarrie will be bracketed with Francisco, also from the M. B. Edwards: stable, and the latter might prove too good for her stable-mate. Guncase is. favoured in many quarters, and if ffid prack 'is heavy his stamina will stancr to him. Wharrun, from O. E. Hooper’s stable, will possibly be the favourite, and a very probable place-filler, is Llewellyn’s Pet, who has not been so well placed for some .• time. Wharrun. Francisco, and Aldershot now look like being the favourites. Frisco Boy the Favourite : There is no sign of a winning loyalty to Frisco Bpy for the Burwood Handicap, and, coupled with Frisco Lady, the bracket is certain to be at a short price. There has been, however, a decided tendency to support. Silver Guy, Toorak. Red Pigeon, Wee Wrack, Mystery Yet, and Carver Doone. Altogether the Burwood Handicap promises to provide a great betting race, and an exciting contest. Frisco Boy, Mystery Yet, and Toorak may prove most popular. An Early Choice Attain was the early favourite for the Seaview Handicap, and he still retains that preference, but the field though not well performed, might present difficulties. Quest, for instance, has been on the gradual improve, Oasis has a reputation, and Stamboul and Wee Potts will all add interest to what promises to be a most intriguing race. Bayard In Favour Bayard is a young pacer of whom great things are expected, and at times he has displayed the brilliance of a champion pacer. He will have his chance in the Pacific Handicap and a 3min 30sec class should not be beyond him. Fine Art is one that should cause trouble to what promises to be the favourite* and Loyal Pat. Laurene Wood, Lightning Lady, and Philario will be in the picture. Narrowed down to three, Fine Art, and Loyal J at might present the real problems. Unhoppled Trotters ■ Unhoppled trotters in the Spring Handicap provide a field full of possibilities. Pilot Peter., now trained by R. R. Berry, may have gained a few friends because of the change of stables, but form still leaves him a bit short compared with Sonoma King, a really good trotter. Possibly, Sonoma King, Guy Hugo, and Pilot Peter may claim the attention of the public. The Sprinters' Carver Doone has previously shown his form over a mile and a quarter, and this he may repeat in the Wamom Handicap. In this race, however, there may be a great race between Ginger Jack and Marsceres. but if reserved it should surprise no one if Carver Doone finishes in front of the pair. In Saddle The Electric Handicap, a mile in saddle, may be decided on horsemanship, and Heather Queen, Repeal, and Doubt are the favourites. The galloping horseman. A. E. Ellis, will ride Olive King, and it will be interesting to find how the crack jockey handles a pacer. This is experimental, but possibly an experiment justified by the experience of other good ’jockeys. Heather Queen. Repeal, and Embark still remain the favourites. The programme is as follows: — 12.30 p.m.— IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP, of £2OO. Unhoppled trotters. 3min 43sec class. One mile and a half. TRENTHAM NOTES

HORSES FOR WANGANUI [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, September 7. The continuance of the cold, wet weather into the spring has had the effect in most centres of keeping the two and three-year-olds backward, and it is likely that none will be as forward as trainers would like for early engagements. Horses that have been racing during the week will have an advantage, and this advantage may hold for this year a little longer than is usually the case in spring racing. Only One Representative Beau Vite. the Beau Pere—Dominant colt in T. George’s stable, will not make the trip to Wanganui as he has developed a cold. George will take only one horse to the meeting. Pcerlefn common with other centres, Trentham has experienced unfavourable weather, and the fresh horses are not so forward as could be wished. Peerless, however, is not a heavily-fleshed filly and she has done a lot of useful work on which she has thrived. While not at her best, she should run good races. A . Trentham will be represented by four- others at Wanganui—Liane, Silver- Fox. Sunny Blonde, and Jewish Lad. Liane is fit with recent racing, and as the handicaps there have small fields she looks like getting into the money. • , Yours Truly is in fast work again, but will not be at Wanganui, if: ; . PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, Septenber 7. Spring racing will start at Wanganui to-morrow with the opening of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s two-day meeting, which will conclude on Saturday. . The fields are large, except in the principal flat handicap, and this year the customary trickiness ol spring form is going to be accentuated by the fact that there has been no preliminary meeting at Marton. The large fields are also going to add to thte difficulties of the public, for WangamC is an egg-shaped track, with the big bulge on the home turn, which is approximately three furlongs on a turn with a straight of only a furlong. Consequently it favours smart horses and anything hot well placed for the run home has a hard task. Although the club had decided to run the Durie Hack Handicap with its 15 acceptors as one race, the chief stipendiary steward (Mr C. Corner) late this afternoon drew attention to the responsibility involved in the case of accident, as the field is two over the safety limit. Consequently, unless there are two scratchings the race will be run in divisions, which will be: — First Division —Jazz Boy, Alyth, Ncreus. LiL guard. Vivacious. Rustem. Sudan. Earl’s Court. Sporting Gift. Deficit, Haile Selassie. Silver Fox, TryLuck. Second Division—Rhodesian, Race Boy, Thala. Red Cat, Proclamation. Rehearsal, Great Legion, Amatory. Namgra, Lord Cavendish, Miss Waitarere. Wilful Lady. Wilful Lady and Try Luck will still be bracketed because there are only 24 numbers on the machine. The very, large field in the Durie Hack Handicap will put a premium on post positions and good beginnings. Horses that appeal on their recent form are - Rhodesian, Alyth, Thala, Earl’s Court, and Sporting Gift, while of the fresh .lot. Rehearsal. Sudan, and Great Legion must be dangerous. In the Hunters’ Steeplechase, which opens the programme, .form points to Salon and Annoyer. Power Chief will have to improve, though he may do so on this track, and Kikiroki looks the likeliest of the others. : In the big field for the maiden race, backers are likely to refer back to the best two-year-old form of last season. Amongst those who will attract attention on that ■ score are Ecstatic. Old Bill, Minga, Coronation, and Morning Flight. Recent form gives Eurotas a chance, but not many of the older horses will appeal. The first four horses in the hurdle race are all possibilities, and the form of the recruits. Erebus and Paul Robeson. look likely. Gold Ballad may have the advantage over the other top-weights in the Putiki Hack, as he has recently raced. Barley Almond has been unlucky in recent starts, and with L. J. Ellis in the saddle she will be well supported. Sly Fox will have to improve, but Warehi runs well on the track, which may not suit Autosweep. Happy Landing and Puroto have to be ■ given chances. ■ There is a small field in the Marangai Handicap, but it is by no means easy. Master Cyklon may be the favourite now, after his win at New Plymouth. but Brazen King. _ Liane, and Tres Sec are all possibilities. - The Seafield Handicap will be interesting, as it contains three of the class two-year-olds of last season, Amigo, Peerless, and Homily. Amigo will have to improve a lot on his form at New Plymouth, and until he oes the chances of the two fillies, both of whom were good last term, are preferred. Of older horses. Quadroon and Clessamor have good form, and Lueullus Lad may run well fresh. The Flying Handicap contains a narticularly good lot. and it is headed by the Australian importation Gay Chou. Tt will be his first anpearance in New Zealand. His best Australian form is good class... Francis Drake and Laughing Lass are two ijr-eb' candidates, and Grate should go well on_ the track. The fresb three-venr-olds include two in Gav Son and' Russian Ballet, who should on their fm-m be very prominent. Florence Mips mav be the best The weather is. fine and the Prospects for to-morrow are good. Betting will be on the ■ single-pool _ system. iTiere have been •no c cratchings and the going Will be excellent. The following 'horses may be supported:— ! Hunters’- -Steeplechase: Salon and Apnoyer. Maiden Race: Ecstatic and Coronation tor Morning Flight). Okehu Hurdles’ ’Begorrah and Erebus. Putiki Hack Handicap: Barley Almond and Gold Ballad. ■Marangai Handicap: Liane and Tres Sec. Seafield Handicap: Quadroon and Homily. TURF GOSSIP

/ A Useful Gallop Included in the horses given some schooling at the five-furlong barrier at Riccarton yesterday was Kmnoull. who may not have been in need of much education at the tapes, but the opportunity was there for him to have a gallop on the outside of the course proper from the five furlong to the winning post. He hit out freely, and there- seems a possibility that he will be seen in action again in the near ■future. Yesterday’s Jumpers Top Rank was jumped over six hurdles at Riccarton yesterday, giving his usual pleasing display, and Dividend made another creditable showing over five hurdles. The latter has certainly done well in his education as a hurdler. and his first attempt in public at Ashburton will be awaited with inBack Lead and Gasmask were given some schooling over the pony hurdles and later over the bigger battens. For Melbourne \ Mr W. T. Hazlett has left Invercargill on his retux-n to Australia, where he has about 12 horses in work. Riding at Wanganui In addition to riding Russian Ballet in the Wanganui Guineas, B. H. Morris has been engaged to ride Brazen King and Laughing Lass in their fh-st-day engagements at Wanganui. S. Red Cat. Granvale, Liane, Peerless, and Russian Ballfet, and on Saturday he will be on Peerless, W. J. Broughton will be on Warehi and Sporting Gut to-day, and on Gay Son in the Wanganui Guineas. A. Messervy has been booked to ride Taurangi in the Wanganui Guineas. L. J. Ellis’s mounts today will be Sudan, Barley Almond. Quadroon. Old Bill, and Florence Mills, and G. Tattersall will be on Ecstatic and Joviality. Still Going It was recently reported in England that Sir A. Bailey’s 27-year-old stallion Son-in-Law had finished his stud career. This is incorrect, as, notwithstanding his years, it is intended to use him for another season or two, though the number of mares will be limited. . A great stayer himself, Son-m-Law has sired many of the same class, .and up to the end of last year his progeny had credited him with more than £350,000. His fee this season was 400 guineas. A Hefty Name Hackenschmidt is the name claimed for the four-year-old gelding by The Ace from Precision. He is being trained at Ellerslie by R. W. Lewis and has shaped well in his few essays to date A Late Start Salon, winner of the Hunt Cup Steeples at New Plymouth and engaged at Wanganui to-day, is an 11-year-old gelding by Leighton from the Demosthenes —Bon Espoir mare Salvette. He was having his first race over country when he won on Saturday and it was only his second success. However, he did not commence racing until he was seven years old, when he won a Hunters’ Flat Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting, and he has started only 10 times in all. Salon is owned by Mr A. F. Symes. Recovering Mr G. L. Stead, who met with serious injuries to his back through a motor-car in which he was travelling overturning while proceeding to Matamata on July 23, is making excellent progress. During last week he was able to get up, and, with assistance, walk a few yards. He hopes to be about again shortly. Successful Trainer Retires When Mr R. A. McKenzie cut down racing some 10 years ago, Lloyd accepted the position of private trainer to Dr. M. G. Louisson, and this was the foundation of a happy and successful association between employer and employee. Lloyd won numerous races with his new team, some of the horses being Gay Crest, Hoylake, The Quorn, Silver Jest, Desert Song, and Tout le Monde. In Lloyd’s opinion. Gay Crest, was the best horse he was ever connected with. The Aus-tralian-bred gelding was unlucky not to have won two Auckland Cups, and for a horse to accomplish that feat, .and to figure as a winner of the Thompson Handicap, stamped him as top class. Silver Jest won only one race, but in doing so gave Lloyd the one and only trophy he won for himself. In a Champion Hack Race, at Awapuni, a case of cutlery was offered for the trainer of the winner, and Dr. Louisson. seeing this information in the programme. suggested to Lloyd that he should enter a horse, and the only one eligible was Silver Jest. The trip was made, and Dr. Louisson, apart from the receipt of a handsome stake, derived much pleasure in seeing the trophy presented to Lloyd, while Lloyd will always have a special pride in the trophy, not only for its usefulness, but for the kindly gesture on the part of Dr. Louisson in giving him the opportunity of competing for the honour Long Service One regrettable feature of the dissolution. in Lloyd’s mind, is the severance of a 20 years’ connexion between him and his trusted servant, H. (“Mick”) Miscal, who has been his head lad for that period. A promising young rider. H. Shannon, has been apprenticed to Lloyd for the last year and Lloyd has made arrangements for the boy’s papers to be transferred to C. Emerson.
