TRAFFIC CONTROL
TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir, —Can you tell us “how much longer we will have to put up with the out-of-date method of control of traffic at the High. Manchester, and Lichfield street intersection? If anyone cares to take the time he will notice that the traffic inspectors on point duty considerably hold up the traffic, and when they are off duty here the traffic flows much faster and evenly through this intersection. In a number of cases the inspectors are very lax in regard to their signals, which are not by any means distinct, and often lead to confusion. One wonders if they have instructions to ignore traffic going north along High street because this traffic is generally held up, whereas traffic along other streets HTxivvng minutes later, is given preference over the north-bound High street 1 trdffic I think everyone will agree that the lights at the Bank of New Zealand corner are a wonderful success and want similar lights installed at the “Majestic” corner, in preference to the obsolete traffic inspectors. Of course, keep the inspectors to see that pedestrians. cyclists and motorists obey these traffic lights 100 per cent, and then we will find that our traffic control is a success and that we are progress-ing.-Yours, etc., PRO GRESS. August 01, 1938.
[When this letter was referred to the Chief Traffic Inspector (Mr J. Bruorton), he said that he would make no comment on anonymous correspondence, but if “Progress” would come to his office he would be only too pleased to explain anything he would like to know.]
