CHANGE OF WEATHER AT RANGIORA
AUGUST RAINFALL LOWEST FOR YEARS
The vagaries of this winter are shown in the sharp contrast between the weather in July and August. For July, the total rainfall at Rangiora was the heaviest for several years, 4.36 inches being recorded. Last month only a little more than three-quarters of an inch of rain was recorded in the district, compared with the 1.52 inches that fell in August, 1937. Three days were wet last month, the rainfall being the lightest for years, and well below the average of 2.57 inches for August. The total rainfall for this year to date is 22.98 inches, which is about three inches off the average yearly total.
WORK AT RANGIORA
FORTY-THREE MEN ON ' SUSTENANCE
There are now 43 men on sustenance in Rangiora. Information supplied by the Employment Bureau at Rangiora states that 28 were placed in employment under scheme 13 this week and that 32 registrations were made. It is believed that more placements will be made next week.
VITAL STATISTICS AT RANGIORA
INCREASE IN NUMBER OF DEATHS
A big increase in the number of deaths at Rangiora last month, compared with the number of deaths for the same period last year, is shown in the vital statistics for August, 1938. The figures are (those for the corresponding period of last year being in parenthesis) Births, 6 (7); deaths, 10 (1); marriages, 5 (5).

FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ TOURNAMENT
Results of this week’s matches in the Friendly Societies' card tournament played by various lodges m the Rangiora district are as follows:—Woodend Oddfellows B 392 beat Rangiora Oddfellows 352; Woodend Oddfellows A 332 beat Rangiora Foresters 285; Rangiora Druids U3 beat Ohoka Oddfellows -9.

The North Canterbury Amateur Billiards Association’s senior snooker championship was won by G. Pu|»ey. who beat E. E. Doggett in the final by 3 games to 0, at Rangiora.

DUNSANDEL LADIES’ GUILD
A meeting of the Dunsandel Methodist Ladies’ Guild was held with Mrs W. J. C. Sheet presiding. As it was the foreign mission meeting members reed letters from missionaries in • the Solomon Islands. A letter was read from the Methodist Church Trustees thanking the guild for its grant. It was decided to plant shrubs in the church grounds. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames H. W. Johnson and W. J. C. Sheat
