WORK IN HEATHCOTE COUNTY
DRAINAGE AND ROAD IMPROVEMENTS
BIG CULVERT FOR FLOOD PREVENTION
An early start will be made with the construction of a new ferroconcfete culvert near the St. Martins tram terminus to replace the old culvert which was unable to cope with flood waters from the hills. The Highways Board . has given the Heathcote County Council a subsidy for the work. The culvert, the construction of which has been under consideration for two years, will have a 12 feet span, a length of 73 feet, and a width of 12 feet. It will provide a quick escape for flood water and it is not expected that even in the wettest periods more than IS inches of water will be in the drain in the future.
Hoad widening is being carried out in various parts of the county. The Port Hills road has been widened nine feet on the Murray Aynsley Hill down towards Braebourne street. With the exception of this part of the widening, the highway through Hillsborough will bfe sealed this year. One of the most dangerous sections in the county, on the Bridle Path road between Heathcote Valley and the bridge, has been greatly improved by widening by nine feet for several chains.
A new road is being made from the Heathcote river at Colombo street to Malcolm avenue. Five per cent, of the reserve in the subdivision has been given for the widening and gardens will be made on the edge of the river bank. The road will have a 27 feet carriage way and a 10 feet footpath, kerbed and channelled. Sixteen men are employed on this work. A start will soon be made, the county overseer (Mr W. W. Scarff) reported yesterday, with the lifting of the Opawa road, from Garlands road, to Grange street.
