PRESENTATION OF BRONZE STAR

LIFE-SAVING AWARD TO SUMNER MAN

ONE OF THREE WITHIN BRITISH EMPIRE

One of the three bronze stars presented by the central executive in London this year for the British Empire, was, at the monthly meeting of the New Zealand Council of the Royal Life-Saving Society, awarded to .Mr S. K. Bassett,, of Sumner, who has been associated with life-saving work in the Dominion since its inception 30 years ago. In making the presentation, Mr G. E. Billson, the chairman, read a letter from the chief secretary in London, in which the work pf Mr Bassett as secretary of the New Zealand Council was warmly praised and the grateful thanks' of the central executive expressed for the distinguished service he had given in New Zealand.

Mr Billson also m-esented Mr Bassett with a certificate handsomely framed by , the local society, and congratulated him on the great honour conferred on him. In reply, Mr Bassett expressed his keen appreciation of the continued co-operation of the members of the New Zealand Council in his work. The other awards in the Empire went to Canada and South Africa. The only other award of its kind Tn New Zealand was made two years ago to Mr W. C. Collier, of Wellington.
