MR W. G. MORRISON RETIRES

FORTY. YEARS IN STATE

FOREST SERVICE

After 40 years' service Mr W. G. Morrison, Conservator of State Forests at Christchurch, has retired. Together with Mrs Morrison and Miss Morrison, he was bidden farewell at a luncheon by officers of the State Forest Service, and was presented with a handsome set of golf clubs. Mr "Morrison Worried the State Forest Service in 1898 and was appointed an assistant forester in 1902, in which capacity he saw service in Canterbury, Marlborough, Otago, and Rotorua. In 1926 he was made conservator of forests in Canterbury. During his period of office Mr Morrison has seen both the exotic forests of the Dominion grow from practically nothing to approximately 500,000 acres, and the dedication of 10,000,000 acres of indigenous forest as State forest reserves. Mr Morrison has had the unique experience of seeing through a complete cycle of forest operation from the planting of the seed to the milling of the final crop and the use of the timber in the building of houses. Mr Morrison is known in Christchurch for his keen interest in tennis and golf. He served in the Boer War with the Eightli New Zealand Rough Riders.
