To-day; 1,200,000 people in Australia hold a licence to drive a car or ride a motor-cycle. Licences are still being granted at the rate of about 9000 a month. It is stated that motorcycle licences account for 80,000 of this total. Therefore, 1,120,000 men and women are qualified to drive motor-cars. The adult population of the Commonwealth is approximately 4,216,000, so that the ratio of licenceholders is particularly ; high. It is the more so when it is realised that at June 30, 1938, there were in use 782,783 motor-cars and trucks in Australia. This means that the comparatively large number of 337,217 licenceholders are not car or truck-owners. In 1936-37, 113,630 licences were granted.
