"PROCEEDINGS IN ORDER"
TOMATO AND STONEFRUIT GROWERS
A REPLY BY MR C.B. POPE
"The whole proceedings of the committee meeting were quite constitutional and inrorder, asmustbe-known to Messrs C. J. Fineran and H. T. Falla," said Mr C. E. Pope, (president of the Christchurch Tomato and StoneFruit Growers' Association) -in a statement to "The Press" last evening in reply to one from. Messrs Fineran and Falla, published on Thursday. The subject arose at a meeting of the. association last Saturday night. "The statements made .' by • Messrs Fineran and Falla are incorrect;" Mr Pope said. "I have had professional advice on the-question, and the.acceptance of their resignations by the committee was -> quite in order, and they are no longer members of the association, of which they are so •ashamed.' Their absence from the committee meeting, as vice-presidents, was a matter they - had evidently decided upon themselves. The only committeeman who had resigned did so two months previously, and was replaced a month ago, on the motion of Mr Fineran. The absent committeeman referred to is at meetings by invitation, and has no vote. This socalled -'remnant,' referred to by Messrs Fineran and Falla, was the full voting .strength of the committee, with the exception of themselves. How Mr F. «JT Scapens, the secretary, imagined .there was not a quorum is past my comprehension. When the secretary drew attention to the supposed absence, of a quorum, they say another member was elected to fill a vacancy," so making a quorum. I would first like to point out that it takes just as many to. make a quorum to replace a committeemanas'it does to receive a resignation, but far more important than this inconsistency is the fact that these proceedings never took place. The whole proceedings of the committee meeting were quite constitutional and in order; as must be known to Messrs Fineran and Falla."
