IMPROVEMENTS TO RACECOURSE
ASHBURTim CLUBS' PLANS LARGE SUM TO BE SPENT
A comprehensive scheme of improvements to the Ashburton racecourse, costing several thousand pounds, is being planned by the Ashburton Racing and Trotting Clubs, and part of the work is expected to be completed before the trotting club's Boxing Day meeting. Reporting <_n the proposal at the annual meeting of the racing club yesterday, the chairman (Mr E. B. Newton) said the Ashburton Trotting Club had approached the racing club for assistance about increasing the grandstand accommodation at tb* course, and the racing club committee had. agreed to assist the trotting club in this important work. The matter was now in _the hands of the architect, and plans and estimates should be to hand shortly. It was proposed to provide «pj»c»al accommodation for club members, and if the scheme was proceeded with. both clubs had decided to open up the whole of the grounds to provide one enclosure, at a reduced admission charge. Until the building scheme was completed, the racing club would continue in the meantime with two enclosures.
