OTAGO HUNT CLUB

TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME The annual steeplechase meeting of the Otago Hunt Club will be held on the Wingatui racecourse to-day. The track is likely to be in firm order, and with strong fields, comprising several high-class gallopers, there should be some close contests. The win and place system will be in operation. The principal event, the Otago Hunt Club Steeplechase, has drawn a remarkably good field at this stage of the season, and a spectacular race should be seen. Gold Wren has made a quick rise to the top of the handicap, but he has been improving all the time, and should now be at his best. Quinopal is making a reappearance since he won at Waimate, where he unfortunately broke down, but if at all nearly right again, this field should be easy for him. El Caballo won ttractively at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and should do well over the Wingatui country. Tomcat will no doubt be considered Gold Wren's; strongest opponent. He ran a close second to him in the Aylesbury Steeplechase on the concluding day of the Grand National Steeplechase meeting, receiving 211 b, and now 'receives two stone. As both are improvers, it is difficult to see Tomcat beating his rival even at the extra concession.

Fireguard will be given an opportunity in the hurdle event to improve on his consistent but unsuccessful performances at Riccarton, On paper, he should be the best proposition, but Corban, Tautau Maid, and Mount Val should also race well, while the Del-rain-McHeath bracket, which was so much in evidence on the final day at Riccarton, will once again have to be seriously regarded. The principal flat event, the Tally-ho Handicap, appears very open, and most of the candidates will receive solid support, while the two hack flat events, the President's Handicap and the Vauxhall Handicap, will set investors difficult problems. The following horses are likely to be well supported:— Seaview Hack and Hunters' Hurdles: Fireguard, Corban, Delrain-McHeath bracket.

Brockville Trot: Stamboul, Parishioner, Hytemoana.

Otago Hunt Cup Steeplechase: Gold Wren, Tomcat, Quinopal.

President's Handicap: Adina, Donadea, Remembo.

Tally-ho Handicap: Valantua, Paladino, Monipere.

Wingatui Trot: Stamboul, Parishioner, Black Watch.

Hunters' Flat Handicap—Tautau Maid, Vantoon, Grand Finale.

Vauxhall Handicap: Drink Up, Donadea, Hunting Chorus.

The programme is as follows:

Aqua Bond Improving: Aqua Bond has made good progress since she was taken in hand by S. A. Edwards and is rapidly assuming racing trim. She is not greatly impressive in appearance, but she has a nice manner of moving and her form before her removal to Addington suggests that she will not be but of her class in Canterbury. Kibo for Stud

Although she made good progress in her preparation for August racing and showed no signs of her usual soreness before the recent Addington meeting, Kibo has since gone lame, and it has been decided that her legs will not allow her to be given the work necessary to bring her back to her best. For some time now she has seldom been free from leg ailments, with the result that her form over a period has not been greatly impressive, but there is little doubt that when she was striding out freely she was a mare well capable of paying her way and going on to the best classes. She was returned to. Southland last week and will be relegated to the stud almost immediately. By Blue Mountain King, a sire of good racehorses and successful brood mares, from Evelyn Wilkes, Kibo has much to recommend her.
