PLANS FOR NEW BUILDING
Additions to Technical
College
DEPARTMENT'S APPROVAL
SOUGHT
A site for a three-storeyed building as an extension to the Christchurch Technical College has been bought and plans for the building have been submitted to the Department of Education for approval, according to a report presented to the board of governors of the college last night. The chairman of the board (Mr T. W. West) remarked that it was hoped to see the building commenced before the end of this year.
The site bought adjoins the college. It consists of three sections in Fyfe street, and the cost of the land was £I6OO. Explaining the proposed lay-out of the building, Mr West said that it would have a frontage of 120 ft to Fyfe street, and a depth of 310 ft. The building would run through to Barbadoes street, A notable feature" would be an up-to-date gymnasium 70ft long, 50ft wide, and 23ft high. ".djoining the gymnasium would be a wool-storage room, and above it would be a wool-classing room. There would also be a visual education room. This would not be an innovation for the college, as a projector had been in use daily for the last 18 months. The basement, which would be above ground level, would be 9ft high, and in this part of the building would be store rooms, a cycle stand, and cloakrooms. On the top floor would be several laboratories. The building would, it was proposed, be of ferro-concrete. "All of this is required," added Mr West, "and I am hopeful that the Minister will give us what we want. We have reason to believe that the Department of Education will approve of what we ask. I hope that before the end of this year we will see the commencement of this building."
