ROLLING-STOCK FOR RAILWAYS

ADDINGTON BUSY PROGRAMME OUTLINED BY MINISTER “The staff at the Addington railway workshops is very busy at the present time on a substantial programme of new rolling-stock, the benefit of which will be felt before the busy summer season approaches,” stated the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister for Railways, in an interview yesterday. “Five combined sleeping cars and two first-class cars are under construction for the Christchurch-Inver-cargill service. There are also 13 second-class cars of the latest type being built, all of which will be completed before Christmas. Sixty •J’ sheep waggons, 37 of which have been turned out of the workshops and put into traffic in the last few weeks, are also in the course of completion, and 300 ‘La’ (open goods) waggons are under construction and will all be completed in time for the Christmas traffic. “The department,” said Mr Sullivan, “is also assisting other Government departments, and is at present manufacturing 700 coal tubs for the Mines Department and 80 sidetip trucks for the use of the Public Works Department on construction works.” ________________
