The Postmaster-General and Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) will arrive from Wellington this morning and travel to Dunedin by the first express. He expects to return north next Wednesday. The Minister will be accompanied by his private secretary (Mr F. M. Sherwood). Mr W. W. Mulholland (president of the New Zealand Farmers' .Union) returned from Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr A. R. Galbraith (City Engineer) returned to Chris-tchurch yesterday morning by the steamer express from the north. Mr G. A. Lewin, a former Town Clerk of Dunedin, has been appointed a director of the State Advances Corporation for a year from July I.—Press Association. Mr T. J. T. Grigg, Government Analyst for Canterbury and Westland, is visiting the North Island. He will attend a conference of dairy research chemists at Palmerston North. The Wellington Harbour Board has appointed Captain M. P. Congdon traffic manager and chief wharfinger as from August 1. Captain Congdon, who was formerly head stevedore at Wellington for the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, Ltd., joined the service of the Wellington Harbour Board on February 1, as assistant to the traffic manager and chief wharfinger in succession to Mr T. Boon, who died on November 28, 1937. A native of Wales, Captain Congdon went to sea in 1915, and served his apprenticeship with the New Brunswick and White Star Line. In 1921 he joined the service of the Aberdeen Line (George Thompson and Sons.'Ltd.) as a junior officer, and when that line was merged with the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company in 1927 he was third officer of the Sophocles, in which he was promoted second officer when her name was changed to Tamaroa. After a short period in the Mamari, he was promoted chief officer of the Maimoa. Captain Congdon was serving in the Mahia when in January, 1932, he ended 17 years at sea by coming ashore at Wellington as assistant to Captain A. Black, head stevedore for the Shaw. Savill, and Albion Comuany. Captain Congdon succeeded Captain Black early last year when the latter became .assistant to the marine superintendent for the company at Wellington.
