LABOUR PARTY'S REQUEST
HOLDING "LUCKY SPOT" COMPETITION PERMISSION REFUSED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL A request by the Hurunui branch of the New Zealand Labour Party for permission to hold in Rangiora's main street a lucky spot competition similar to that held in festivity week was refused by the Rangiora Borough Council on Wednesday evening. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) said that if permission were given to hold the competition an undesirable precedent would be created. Were the competition to be run it would be unjust to refuse other organisations, such as the hockey, football, musical, and dramatic clubs, permission to hold competitions also. No mention had been made for the reason of the request, and the natural inference was that the money raised by the competition would be devoted to helping the cause of the Lahpur Party. Cr. W. C. Prosser: I move that permission be granted for the competition to be held, providing the proceeds are handed over to charity. Cr. W. T. N. Keir» You may as well make the same stipulation for the National Party. They've had the town combed pretty thoroughly. The Mayor: I'm looking at the principle of the thing. What is the object of this request? Is it in aid of charity? We would know what we were doing if we granted permission to the Plunket Society, for instance, for that is a charitable organisation and worthy of every help. It simply means that if we allow this competition to be held, everybody will be after us. After further discussion, Cr. F. E. Martyn moved that permission to hold the competition be refused. The motion was carried. LINCOLN BENEDICTS MEET A meeting of the Lincoln Benedicts was held recently. Mr G. S. Peryman presided. The secretary (Mr H. B. More) reported that arrangements were well in hand for the ball at the end of August. Final arrangements were made for the ball and it was decided that unless the measles epidemic became any worse postponement was not necessary. GOLF HORORATA CLUB The inter-club match played on the Terrace Station course, Hororata, between the Greendale and Hororata Clubs, was won by Hororata.
CULVERDEN RAILWAY RETURNS
INCREASE IN NUMBER OF SHEEP An increase of 2153 sheep, compared with last year's figures, is shown in the monthly returns of the Culverden Railway Station. The total number railed from Culverden this year is 3582, with 1430 last year, the increase being because of the late season for fat lambs. Most of the other are on a par with those of last year. The Lewis Pass bus service js still running just as far as Maruia Springs, and because of the many booking offices for the service, it is impossible to ascertain the total revenue for the new route to the West Coast. The figures are as follows, showing last year's in parenthesis:—Outward: Cattle, 241 (136); sheep, 3582 (1430); tonnage, 34 (60); revenue, £364 (£177). Inward: Tonnage, 522 (490); revenue, £516 (£576); bus service revenue, £95; passenger revenue, £43. compared with £27.
