ELDERLY MOTORIST CONVICTED
LICENCE SUSPENDED FOR TEN YEARS
(PRESS ASSOCIA riOR TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN. July 25. “The licensing authorities are partly to blame in this case. Here is a man 73 years old who is deaf and whose sight is failing, driving a car,” said counsel for John Sanders, who admitted a crarge of intoxication while driving a car. Counsel added that Sanders was
probably the oldest man to appear on such a charge in the Dominion. It was stated that Sanders suffered injuries in a collision necessitating hospital treatment. In view of his age and splendid war record (he went to the war in 1915 at the age of 50, serving to the end) counsel asked for leniency. The Magistrate (Mr W. H. Bundle S.M.) convicted him and ordered him to come up for sentence if called on within two years. His licence was suspended for 10 years.
