ASSISTANT DffiECTOR OF EDUCATION A GRADUATE OF CANTERBURY COLLEGE (PKE33 ASaOCU.'iIO» MLWJBAJt.) WELLINGTON, July 21. The appointment of Dr. Clarence Edward Beeby to the position of Assistant Director of Education was announced to-day. Dr. Beeby was appointed Director of the Council of Educational Research in June, 1934, being selected from applicants in England, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. He has now directed research work approved by the council for nearly the full term of five years, for which the organisation was to be financed by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. During that time a large body of material has been accumulated by the council. Much of it has been published in book form already, placing on record the evidence collected and the conclusions reached on important educational problems in the Dominion. Work of Council Increased interest in education in New Zealand is attributed by the latest report of the council largely to the work of Dr. Beeby and his staff. A special research undertaken by Dr. Beeby himself last year, on

intermediate schools, recently published, is described as, "a noteworthy contribution towards the solution of a most important and most difficult problem." The council has also published a psmphlet by its director on "The Education of the Adolescent in New Zealand." -At the time of his appointment in 5934 Dr. Beeby was acting professor of philosophy at Canterbury University College. He holds the degrees of M.A. W.Z.), with first-class honours in philosophy, and PhJX of Manchester University. Before he became director of the Council, for Educational Research he had already a wide experience ol research in psychology, not only in New Zealand but also in Britain and the United States. Dr. Beeby's Career Dr. Besby is 36 years of age. He was born in Leeds, England, and came to New Zealand" at the age of four. He was educated at the Christchurch Boys' High School and at Canterbury College, and began his university course in arts in 1920. In 1922, the final year of his B.A. course, he won the senior scholarship in philosophy. In the following year he. graduated M.A., with first-class honours in philosophy.. In February, 1923, he was appointed assistant lecturer in education and philosophy at Canterbury College. About the middle of 1925, Dr. Beeby went to England on leave and studied psychology - for two years at Manchester University, and at University College, London. In 4927 he took the degree of Ph.D. at Manchester. Returning to New Zealand in 1928 Tie -'was-again' lecturer in education and philosophy at Canterbury College, and in 1929 he was appointed director of the educational and psychological laboratories.

During a visit to the United States in 1930 and 1931, Dr. Beeby studied psycholofy and education in universities and clinics.;. While Professor J. Shelley was in America in 1932, Dr. Beeby was acting professor of education at Canterbury College; and after the retirement of Professor C. F. Salmond he became acting professor of philosophy.
