OBITUARY
+ MR F. G. LEWTON Mr Frederick George Lewton, who died last week, had a long connexion with rural and sporting interests in North Canterbury. Mr Lewton was the third son of Mr James Lewton, who moved from Rangiora to farm land on the Mam North road'near Amberley, on which he buiit the well-known two-storey homestead in 1879. Brought up on his father's farm, Mr Lewton later was employed on surveys under Mr R. <-. Taylor, county clerk and surveyor at Waikairi, and also under Mr D. McClure, district surveyor, when subdivisions of large estates, including part of Stonyhurst, were earned out. He later took over his father's holding and successfully farmed it for a number of years. Giving up farming on his own account, Mr Lewton took up farm management and was manager for Mr A. LT Kennedy (Wellington), of Mount Whitnow, for Sir Charles Westland, of Glenmuick (Cheviot), for Mr O T. Evans, of Patiti (Greenpark), and for Mr A. J. Lawrence, of Bramdean. During his residence in the Amberley district, Mr Lewton was actively associated with the sport of the countryside. A member of the Amberley Steeplechase Club, he acted as clerk of the course for a number of years. An expert shot, he competed successfully in many shooting matches and, as a member of the Amberley Gun Club, he won the Boswell gun trophy in a strong field. Mr Lewton was a past-master of the Amberley Masonic Lodge.
