RECOVERY OF RATES
—-♦ APPORTIONMENT OF COURT COSTS WAIMAIRI COUNCIL'S PROPOSALS The payment of a proportion of the court costs of proceedings to recover rates which have to be written off is being sought by the Waimari County Council from local bodies for which it acts as collector. The chairman of the council's finance committee tor. a. Kitson) reported to the council meeting last evening that the finance committee of the Drainage Board naa agreed to recommend proportionate payment to the board. . i„„A C f "The Drainage Board is the largest body we collect rates for," said Cr. Kitson, "and if we can get them to agree the other bodies may follow the lead. We want an apportionment of the costs 01 recovering rates according to what the council will receive. The Drainage Board has not given a reply, but i would like permission to approach tne finance committees of the Waimakarm River Trust and the Tramways Board when it does arrive." He had also indicated to the board that the time was coming when the council would have to go into a number of cases of outstanding rates in the light of the power given the council under the hardship clause. The committee had agreed to' forgo the board s proportionate share of any rates remitted on the understanding that the council made thorough investigation into the cases.
