FUMES FROM FACTORIES

TO TH« EDITOR OF THX PBESS. Sir, —There appears to be no one to give the date of selection for "factory areas." I have been speaking to a number of people who like myself would seem to be merely "paying the penalty" for having been born, most unfortunately, some 50 years ago in the city. . I suppose we must go on enduring the various unpleasant, not to say "dangerous" odours from these mushroom factories, until perhaps some tourist complains or refuses to come again to our "garden" city because of them and their ugliness. Country people may prefer their own fresh air to the risk of. "colic" caused by a day's visit to the shops, if the nuisance becomes much wore prevalent. May I thank Sister Davies for her 1 reply, and ask a further question. Does she know if the fumes from certain substances used in industry today can rise into the upper air, to descend by night through quieter currents and deposit lead generally. Also, does the lead carry as far as the odour from such substances?. There are people who say to me: "I don't read letters in the newspaper. Surely no sensible person would bother to write them." These people do not seem to realise that "The Press" is one's only means of protest. lam happy to be able also to say that there are others who admit that they owe much to the columns containing letters from Sister Davies and those who write upon the many helpful matters. More real good might be accomplished in the world if people tidied up their own back yards in preference to meddling in the affairs of other countries or remaining content with superficial criticism of outside affairs abroad. —Yours, etc., HEALTH FIRST.
